Stamford officials convened an emergency ordinance after two mad dog scares. Dogs must be vaccinated yearly by February 15 and wear collars with tags or be shot if roaming. Dr. Ballard offers rabies shots at 1 dollar at the fire station from 9 am to noon and 4 pm.
Rev Sterling Price of University Baptist Church Abilene will speak at the Lueders Chamber of Commerce banquet at the new school cafeteria on Thursday night February 26. Tickets are 125 per person and served by Home Economics girls starting at 730.
R. P. Pinson brother of Mrs. R. T. Wilcox died of a heart attack at his Okmulgee home. The obituary notes survivors including wife and several sisters and brothers. Funeral was held Saturday in Okmulgee with relatives stopping in Oklahoma City and visiting an ill sister there.
Stamford Rotary Club members viewed The Hoaxters a documentary on the rise of communism and related isms with theater owner C B Anderson hosting. The film traces events from 1917 czarist overthrow to present and likens dictators to a sideshow backer and his snake oil. Members first met at Nat's Cafe for a meal before the screening.
The Tuxedo Woman's Missionary Society hosted the Sub-District meeting of the WSCS at Tuxedo Church. Mrs. J. L. Douglas of Albany led the program titled Our Charge to Keep. Refreshments followed for a large local and area bystanders.
Jesse Curtis Collins, 64, of Breckenridge, died Tuesday in a Breckenridge hospital. He was brother in law of Mr and Mrs Tom Smith of Stamford and of Mrs Effie Ryan of Rotan. Collins, a pumper for Hilgenburg Purdue Co at Breckenridge, previously worked for the Ohio Co. at Eliasville and had lived in Breckenridge since 1920.
Rainfall in Stamford totaled .30 inch with .23 inch by early Tuesday. Light hail and sleet followed midnight amid electrical disturbances. forecasters warned of a freeze in April, though the February 2 groundhog forecast did not materialize. Only 1953 January traces of moisture were previously recorded.
The Camp Fire Girls event for Bluebirds and Horizon Clubbers is moved from the high school cafeteria to St. John's Methodist Church. The box supper will be on Thursday February 12 with Ted Myers as master of ceremonies and Rev. Johnny Dibbs giving the invocation. The program will be presented by the girls.
Mrs Paul Frizell performed a noon Friday program for the Exchange Club at Nat's Cafe. Accompanied by Mrs George Rollins, she sang Come to the Fair Wonderful One and With a Song in My Heart. William E Mayes chaired the event with Roy Arledge presiding. The club's public relations and youth activity committees will coordinate a football banquet with the Rotary club. food committee members were Jack Fuqua Lee Walker and Marvin Hinds. Boy and girl of the month are George Humpmey and Bettylu Johnson.
Abilene insurance man Frank Bell will deliver the morning sermon at St. John's Methodist Church, starting 10 50. A Gideons member, his topic is The Gideon Story. Evening service at seven continues Acts Chapter 9 with youth choir special music. Visitors welcome.
Mr and Mrs Cleburne Huston left Friday for a several days visit with their son Bob Huston and his wife at Lake Jackson.
Mr and Mrs John A Brooks return to Stamford after a four month stay in Dallas Shreveport La and San Antonio.
A Bethel Lutheran Church gathering in the Ericksdahl community on February 16 at 7 30 pm will discuss Farm Bureau matters. Haskell County Farm Bureau hosts the event with Loys D Barbour presiding and E W Carlson in charge. Refreshments follow.
Stamford Boy Scouts participate in observing the 43rd anniversary of Scouting while Chisholm Trail Council marks its 33rd. The Abilene based council serves Jones Haskell Shackelford Callahan Taylor Coleman and part of Run nels counties with 2800 members. Plans include big events and annual circuses amid youth achievements and national involvement.
Troop 41 held an open house on Monday night to celebrate its 31st anniversary of Scouting. Scoutmaster Herb Carter and assistant Jack Metlendon led a candlelight ceremony installing three new members Jimmy Melton Ronnie Reed and Sterling McCann. About 40 people attended including parents guests and troop officials. Handicraft displays and stunts entertained attendees and a Cub Scout exhibit at Perry Bros. Star drew interest.

Dr. Cr L Cromwell will attend the 13th annual Southwestern Congress of Optometry in Fort Worth on February 16 14 and Ll. He is the incoming president of the West Texas Optometric Society.
Stamford edges Merkel 47 46 with Weyne Wash hitting the deciding field goal with eight seconds left to seize a district lead in 5 AA hoops. The victory boosts Stamford to a 12 6 season mark and sets up a regional bid at Lubbock if the district title is secured.
Tom J. Cannon 91 of Rule died at Haskell hospital on Wednesday at 7 30. A pioneer resident, he moved from Jones County to Rule in 1907 and lived there since. He is survived by his wife two sons and four daughters and was brother to the late W C Cannon of Stamford.
A group of teachers living in the area and teaching in Haskell county attended the February meeting of the Haskell county unit of the Texas State Teachers Association in Rochester on February 2. Irene Stewart, president of Sogerton School, led the program with representatives from Rule, Paint Creek, Troskell, and Rochester. A color film Within the Blessing was shown. A banquet is planned for March 2 at Uae, with officer elections to be held.
Raymond Brigham relocates to Aurora Nebraska as a chemical company distributor while pursuing a PhD. He and wife and two children Barbara and Ray Allen settle there. Brigham, son of H F Brigham, earned a Master of Arts degree on December 14 from Iowa State College in Ames after teaching and advanced study, and previously received a Bachelor of Science from Texas Tech in Lubbock.
Mrs James Lake Woodyard formerly Lena Larche traveled to Kimbell West Virginia to visit her husband's parents. Her husband W M Woodyard, involved with the Naval Reserve Training Center in Abilene, has been transferred to Norfolk Virginia.
The Stamford City Council finalizes a 13 cent per 1,000 cubic feet rate increase for Lone Star Gas Company effective after April. The meeting also adopts rabies vaccination for dogs, sets February 15 deed deadline, and allows police to seize untagged logs in streets. Budget year start is shifted to October 1 and officials plan a new budget for September.
Twin calves a heifer and a bull belonging to Mr and Mrs Vick Sandefur were born three days apart. The heifer arrived February 2 and the bull February 5. Both are whitefaced but not identical twins. Sharon and Robbie Sandefur are very proud of the twins.
Stamford Chamber committees raise funds for the annual Jones County PRA and Abielot livestock show at the Texas Cowboy Reunion grounds. The joint project of Hamlin Anson and Stamford chambers has over 1000 dollars in total premiums. Each gown provides one third of prize money while donors support the cotton growing contest.
An open competitive examination to fill the Avoca postmaster role will be held in the civil service room at Stamford postoffice. Applicants may obtain blanks at Avoca postoffice from Mrs. J A White or from the United States Civil Service Commission in Washington DC. Candidates must reside in Avoca’s delivery area for at least one year prior to the closing date. All applications must be on file in Washington by March 5 1953. The examination date will be announced later.
A son, David Scott Brown, was born January 22 in San Antonis to Mr and Mrs J Brown. Mrs Brown is the former Beth Williams, daughter of Mr and Mrs Lee Williams of Stamford. Mr Brown is the son of Mr and Mrs Hub Brown of Leeders. Mrs Williams recently celebrated a birthday after visiting three weeks with the family.
J T Marlin of Sweetwater presents a color 16 mm film of Europe and Bible lands at Stamford Church of Christ Friday February 13 at 7 40 pm. The travelogue covers Rome Athens Egypt the Dead Sea Jordan and Palestine with scenes of Jericho Bethlehem Nazareth and Jerusalem gates. A brief lecture on the Holy Land follows the screening.
Driver Paul Wisdom of Wales Trucking Co. narrowly escaped serious injury after his overturned tractor caught fire on a rural road near Stamford. He was pinned in the cab for hours until a wrecker freed his legs, with the exhaust protecting him from further injury. he was treated and released from Stamford Sanitarium.
Mrs Bert Brydsen of Austin died Monday after a brief illness at her home in Austin. She had not been well and her passing was unexpected. Funeral services were held in Austin Wednesday morning with burial there. The Pardue family in this city mourns the loss while another daughter, Ray mond Ramsey, of Austin, is noted among relatives.
The Stamford Phiebsew band made its annual trip to the Southwestern Exposition and Fat Stock Show Saturday, which was Stamford Day.
