Post Office to Close Monday Holiday

The Post Office will be closed Feb 15 as the first of three new Monday holidays for federal employees. Outgoing mail leaves Stamford at 2 55 pm. Mail must be in the post office by 1 pm on holidays but may be mailed in the box any time before 2 55 pm on holidays and weekends.

Scandalous John Selmon Dies After Long Illness

Scandalous John Selmon, 86, longtime cowboy and key figure in the Cowboy Reunion staff since its start, died February 8 at Stamford Memorial Hospital after a long illness. Funeral held at Central Presbyterian Church with burial at Highland Memorial Cemetery. Survivors include his wife, a son Dr Tony B. Selmon, three grandchildren, and a sister.

Friday Rites Held for Mrs. G. Pryor

Funeral for Mrs. George K. Pryor Sr., 83, was Feb. 5 at Central Presbyterian Church with Rev. Jerry Boles and Rev. Jarrell Sharp officiating. She died Feb. 3 at the Stamford Inn where she had lived since 1966 and was born Margaret Sloan on July 15, 1887 in Hillsboro. Married in 1910 in Nashville, the Pryors moved to Stamford in 1919. he died in 1963. Survivors include son Dr. George Pryor Jr., two granddaughters, two great grandchildren, and many civic church roles.

City Election Set April 6 By Council

City officials ordered an election for Tuesday April 6 with polls open 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. The mayor two councilmen and a police chief will be chosen. Election judges are Richard Lane and Partlett Holland with clerks Mrs Lane and Mrs Holland. Incumbents Mayor James Self seeks another term. Police Chief B Q Cooper notes James Ashcroft will not run. Dr C L Cromwell optometrist filed for Ashcroft’s Place 5. Fareed Hassen seeks another term for Place 4.

Stamford Leaders Receive State Industrial Awards

Stamford business and civic figures were honored with citations from the Texas Industrial Commission and Governor Preston Smith for contributing to Texas industrial development. The event marked the completion of a year’s work to include Stamford in Insta-Site, the state’s advanced computerized site location data bank, with an 8 page printout listing 1444 local items.

Registration to Voters Reopened Until February 28

Jones County Tax Collector Louis Johnson received notice of voter registration reopening under a new law. The period now extends to February 28, replacing the previous deadline of January 31. Johnson expects few new registrations but aims to fix incomplete applications.

Clyde M. Kiett 8? died Monday in Stamford Memorial Hospital after Dec 17 illness. Retired banker born June 9 1888 in Limestone County. Funeral Feb 9 at 3 p.m. at Kinney Funeral Home with ministers from Central Presbyterian and First Baptist officiating. Survivors include wife Martha Fancher Kiett, a daughter Mrs W T Stovall, a grandson Clyde T Stovall, a great granddaughter, and four sisters.

Bethel Church Hosts Swedish Smorgasbord Dinner

Bethel Lutheran Church in Ericksdahl hosts a Swedish smorgasbord serving 600 guests with four dining shifts on February 19. Volunteers from the church and community, including men, women, and children in Swedish attire, prepare and serve fruit soup, meat dishes, salads, breads, and desserts. Tickets are $3 for adults and $2 for children ages 5 to 12, with requests directed to Bethel Lutheran Church in Stamford, Texas.

Ordinance Sets Speed Limits On Highways

An emergency measure sets varying speed limits on new major highways entering Stamford following a Texas Highway Department survey. U S 380 limits range from 30 to 90 mph by segment. Highway 277 limits range from 30 to 50 mph with several changes. Signs will indicate the limits.

Lions to Host Pancake Supper for Scholarship Fund

The Lions Club holds its fourth annual pancake supper Friday night at Stamford High School Cafeteria with adult tickets at 1 and children under 12 at 75 cents. Proceeds fund Stamford’s scholarship program. auctions follow the meal with items donated by local merchants and citizens. Lions aim for 800 to 1,000 attendees, and tickets are available from club members or at the door.

Lone Star Gas Wins City Franchise in Stamford

The Stamford city council granted Lone Star Gas a new franchise on first reading authorizing gas service to the city and annexed areas. The agreement imposes stricter terms including maps and line location, restoration to original street condition, government and industrial rate inclusions, and a 2 percent gross receipts tax with potential increases as permitted by state law.
