Fifty years ago on February 11, 1900, Stamford welcomed Texas Central’s first passenger train. Engineer Dutch John Uloth waved from the engine as Hardy Holt conducted the inaugural trip, drawing a crowd that traveled by buggy and horse, some picnicking to mark the milestone. Stamford residents, including Mrs. Georgie Flournoy, joined the historic event.

Funeral set for Lueders man John Tom Vickers
John Tom Vickers, 23, of Lueders, died in a car crash between McCamey and Crane. Funeral at Lueders Baptist Church on Friday at 3 PM, conducted by Rev. Melvin Byrd. Burial in Lueders Cemetery. He served in Europe with the 759th Field Artillery Battalion and is survived by his parents, a sister, and a brother.

John Willoughby of the Stamford law firm Watson and Willoughby was appointed district attorney of the local judicial district by Gov. Allan Shivers to fill the unexpired term of Esco Walter. The appointment was effective immediately though confirmation had not been received by Thursday evening. Willoughby, a 20 year old bar examinee, has a long record with the Jaycees, Exchange Club, Civic Improvement, and church and fraternal activity. He and his wife and two sons will remain in Stamford for the present.
