Stamford public schools dismiss classes for the rest of the week amid flu like illness. Over 200 of 1000 students absent, mostly in high school, with several teachers also out. Teachers have work days. varsity basketball only game played Tuesday. Kindergarten pupils also off with cold symptoms.
The Stamford Art Foundation announced its board of trustees featuring ranchers, art collectors, and Western art patrons. Notable names include Amon G. Carter Jr. Fort Worth publisher and foundation president, John Justin Fort Worth president of Justin Boot Co., and J. J. Gibson Guthrie manager of 6666 Ranch, among many others. The foundation noted more trustees may be added later.
A late filing brings four contested races in the Jones County Democratic primary. County chairman Moody Galbraith lists J D Hargrove to run for county school superintendent against Homer J Merriott, while incumbent Everett Beaver declines reelection. Other races feature county judge, county clerk, district clerk, state representative, and several precinct justice positions with opponents listed for several incumbents.
Stamford city council failed to grant funds needed to remodel rooms in the Carnegie Library for three social service agencies. Rev. Jarrell Sharp urged space for an Abilene State School satellite, a seven county family planning program, and a senior citizen center, with estimated remodeling costs of 3000 to 3600 dollars. The council asked the city manager to study feasibility without city maintenance or operation costs and postponed final decisions to Feb. 15.
A task force to promote opportunities for area seniors will hold its first meeting tonight at 7 in the Outreach Center. The panel, chaired by Roy Craig and formed from local residents, follows a prior postponement to resolve conflicts. Members include Irene Steward, C L Cromwell, Larry Thomas, and others.
The Stamford Housing Authority in its 14th year reports all 36 low rent units across five city areas are full and cash bounded. Executive director N M Phy notes 1972 rental income plus interest totals 13 048 62 dollars, with tenants split into elderly 24 widows 20 and families 12.
Local National Guard members may choose drill dates during February as Texas aims to boost enlistment. Guardsmen across the state are not doing fixed monthly drills but are assigned weeknight or weekend times to contact prospects. In Stamford and nearby areas, guardsmen will be at the armory most evenings and on weekends, with some working in hometowns.
