Stamford will move clocks forward one hour on February 9 while keeping sun time for daily operations. Merchants and schools expect same opening hours by sun at least for now, with school buses departing at dawn to pick up children. Railroads and buses stay on clock time. post office and banks adjust similarly, causing a season of confusion until routines settle.
Plans for the fourth annual Jones County 4 H Club and FFA Livestock Show at the Texas Cowboy Reunion grounds on February 21 have appointed Finance Grounds Beef Cattle Breeding Herefords Jersey and Hog divisions with named chairmen. Roy Arledge announced the lineup featuring L M Hardy Horace Arledge Earl Reese A C Humphrey Ray Clark Floyd Lynch Otis Miller and others plus a reception and wagon dinner committee.
The Jones County chapter of the American Red Cross will hold its annual meeting Monday at 7:30 pm in the city hall council room. County chairman Byron Lewis will preside as reports on the membership drive War Relief Fund and production program are presented. Representatives from county towns are expected. new officers and committee chairs will be elected, with a Midwestern Branch representative likely attending.
Woodrow Cook directs National Youth Administration training for welders and machinists in Ranger for defense plants. He has supervised the program six months, with a class of 40 students and many nearing course completion. Cook and his family moved to Ranger recently. he is son of Mr and Mrs C L Cook. He previously worked with his uncle at Stamford Parts and Machine Shop and in Portsmouth Navy Yard.
Sam ford High School teacher B. Pruett resigns to accept a job at an airplane factory in Garland near Dallas. He and his wife left last Friday. Mrs. Bert Flemins is hired to fill the vacancy, with some classwork shifts planned instead of a full replacement.
Thomas Nathaniel Meador 71 a resident of Jones county since 1906 died Wednesday at 8 25 am at his East Campbell street home after a heart ailment. Funeral Thursday at Kinney Chapel with Rev Cal C Wright of St John’s Methodist Church officiating. Burial Highland cemetery. Survivors include his wife three daughters a son and two grandchildren. Pallbearers and flower girls named from St John’s Good Samaritan class.
The Stamford Music Club under Mrs W D Duble plans lectures sponsored by the Rotary Club to aid area defense work for aviation cadets at Stamford Arledge field. A bridge and forty two party is set for February 14 at the home economics cottage with 2 cent admission and table groups welcome.
Mr and Mrs F M Selby and son Fred Jr and Mr and Mrs Zeke Selby and daughter Annette returned Wednesday from Tishomingo Mississippi where they attended the funeral of D H Selby father of F M and Zeke Selby.
Dr Garry Cleveland Myers editor in chief of Children's activities will speak in Stamford on Friday February 13 addressing the Exchange Club at noon. He will conduct a joint lecture with his wife at 3 p.m. in the high school auditorium. Myers is known as a writer teacher public speaker and national psychological consultant and columnist.
The Stamford Parent Teachers Association invites area PTAs to hear Dr. and Mrs. Garry Cleveland Myers, noted editors and educators, speak Friday at 3 PM in the high school auditorium. A 2 PM roundtable precedes the lecture with no admission charge, and Myers will also address the Exchange Club at noon and the high school at 11 and 11:30. They then travel to Roby for further engagements.
Walter Skiles, secretary, announced a Baptist Sunday School zone meeting to be held at the Corinth community Baptist Church on Sunday afternoon February 15. The January gathering at Lueders included representatives from five churches with Rev. W. K. Horn as principal speaker on "What is Man?"
Judge C F E Coombes will speak on The Trial of Jesus from a Lawyer s viewpoint at Central Christian Church Sunday night. Dr C H Morris pastor invites public attendance and notes the talk has drawn strong interest in other communities.
The Fort Worth man will address the Chamber of Commerce meeting. Improvements on Highway 380 through Stamford are underway with department staff stationed there. Work includes stabilizing shoulders flattening slopes mudjacking concrete pavement and bridge repairs. A $76 616 appropriation funds 29.1 miles from Stamford to county lines near Sagerton and Lueders.
A string of local home transfers shows residents purchasing and moving into new properties across multiple streets. Notable purchases include Weldon Carlton at 818 Wells Avenue and Monroe Ethridge at 1016 Symonds Place. Others relocate to 1018 Vanderbilt, 510 East Campbell Street, 1023 East Reynolds Street, and more as renovations and new builds proceed.
Lee Dewees, employed at Consolidated Aircraft in San Diego since about a month, has been called back to decide on returning to army service. He has been deferred due to his civilian work while his Stamford family stays put for now.
800 people attended a SPCA meeting in Roundup Hall with an old fashioned barbecue and two films promoting credit stability and defense farming. Stamford leaders J B Pumphrey Jr and J F McCulloch were re elected. speakers urged food production and prompt machinery repair for defense. The Emery estate ranch interests in Kent and Crosby counties were discussed along with Swenson heirs’ sale plans. The Marquis and Marquise de Talleyrand, longtime Paris residents, were guests en route to ranch sites.
Ticket sales for the Institute of International Understanding sponsored by the Rotary Club started this week with women’s groups handling distribution. The first forum is February 19 in the High School auditorium with Dr No-Yong Park of Kirksville Missouri speaking on Our Neighbors in the Pacific. Dr Park will address students the afternoon before the public forum. Last year nearly 200 Rotary clubs sponsored institutes in 19 states to foster awareness of how shrinking global ties affect nations and communities.
Barbara Celise Price three months old, child of Mr. and Mrs. C O Price, died at Stamford Sanitarium Sunday. Burial was in Granbury after services held Monday. survivors include parents, a sister, a brother, grandparents Ralph King of Stamford and J A Rylee of Granbury, and great grandparents J T Price and L F Balemon of Granbury.
Major Bob Arnold, commanding officer at Victory Field Vernon, spent several days this week there. He previously led the Air Corps Training Detachment at Stamford Arledge field.
A Victory banquet will be held at the First Baptist Church Tuesday night at 7 30 to celebrate the completion of the budget campaign. It also serves as a get acquainted period for the new pastor Rev Miles B Hays and wife. T R Harrison education director will be master of ceremonies. The girls ensemble will sing and the principal address will be by Rev Mr Hays.
Set Joe Hubbard of the State Highway Patrol Abilene outlined main highway crash causes to the Rotary Club. He cited speed drinking fatigue negligence parking on highways and stopping at accident scenes. Warren Tayman chaired the talk as Frank Ramey announced new members and welcomed returning former members.
January food stamp sales in Jones county hit a record month total of 12 676.50 with 7 182.00 in orange stamps and 5 404.50 in blue stamps. Since May 16 1941, total sales rose to 1 Q98.00. orange stamps total 51 566.00 and blue stamps 39 932.50.
Nearly all of the 5000 dollar capital stock for a local Stamford housing corporation has been subscribed. Two out-of-town firms remain to be heard from, assuring full funding. The Chamber of Commerce sponsors the project, with a board of directors elected by stockholders. Homes will be built under FHA Title VI in defense areas with up to 90 percent mortgage insurance. An estimated 50000 dollars of new housing can be built with the 5000 dollar capital.
Two Red Cross First Aid courses led by Dale Phelps for men and Miss Vera Steely for women start soon in the City Hall civilian defense program. Sessions run Tuesday and Wednesday evenings 7:30 to 9:30 with 20 hours of instruction and a certificate upon passing exams. Enrollment closes next week to avoid delays.
C F Upshaw of Stamford appears acceptable for a member seat on Jones County selective service board. J P Pickers chair said a letter to the local board was addressed Saturday, but Upshaw must be endorsed by the American Legion Stamford unit before formal appointment. McDaniel’s resignation, moving from the county, is to be included in the filing with state offices.
L. W. Johnson addressed the Exchange Club last Friday. He outlined World War I and its relation to the present world conflict. A visitor from Abilene explained income tax reports and answered questions on the tax.
Ray C. Crockett son of Mr and Mrs Olin Crockett has been moved from Mitchell Field New York City to a station in Iceland his family was informed. He reached Ireland January 9.
O T Clark of Fort Worth to deliver a patriotic address at the Chamber of Commerce banquet at Coombes Roundup hall Texas Cowboy Reunion grounds. Leaders from Stamford clubs will give two minute reports and aviation cadets from Stamford Arledge field will present a skit. Chicken halves will headline the menu as officers and directors face election and committee duties are listed.
Monte Knutson won a scholarship with the Apollo Boys' choir in Dallas and will receive six months of intensive training. He left Dallas with the choir for Sanford Florida, where they will stay six weeks including classwork and tours before returning to Dallas for a summer period then to Camp in Asheville North Carolina until July. He is the son of Mr and Mrs B F Knutson and has gained a reputation in singing.
