Stamford Fire Chief Bill Lawson notes 159 fire calls and 355 ambulance runs last year totaling 514. In January 1976 the department logged 69 calls from 31 days, with four full time firefighters on duty. Fire alarms ranged from grass and auto to structure smoke and fuel spills.
The Rev. Carl Hatch, Abilene evangelist and founder of the Andrew Evangelistic Association, will preach at Temple Baptist Church Stamford 309 E Campbell at 6 p.m. Sunday Feb 8. Hatch, once an alcoholic who battled gambling and a stormy life, shares his faith journey and ministry.
Texas State Technical Institute will offer adult vocational courses at Stamford High School. An organizational meeting is set for Tuesday Feb 10 at 7 30 p m in the Stamford High School Auditorium. Courses include bookkeeping typing auto mechanics and nurse aide for residents 18 or older. contact Raymond Hughes at the high school for details.
Interested parents and citizens may visit Stamford High School vocational education classes February 8 through 14 and learn about five programs. Teachers Weldon Holbrooks and Willie Medford lead vocational agriculture classes while Jerry Schubert directs the Distributive Education Club.
Stamford High School will start driver training on Monday with Class 1 M. Students must be 15 on or before March 22 to participate and the fee is $45 to begin driving.
Judge J Neil Daniel ruled for the Stamford Hospital District and Hamlin Hospital District in related suits by southern Jones County taxpayers. The decision follows his pledge to rule within a week after a Jan. 29 hearing and cites the law and evidence as the basis.
Stamford faces exhausted funds for this year delaying a $200000 project to build 14 rental units. The Stamford Housing Development Corporation plans to refile the loan with Farmers Home Administration when new funds become available around July 1. Incorporators include Roy M. Craig Bill Koon Danny Blain James Self and Jimmy Hokanson.
In Jones County two races appear on the May Democratic primary ballot with one in the countywide sheriff’s race and one in Precinct 3 commissioner. Incumbent Sheriff Woodrow Simmons of Anson faces Burl Walker, also of Anson. In Precinct 3, P. A. Lynn seeks a second term as commissioner, opposed by Don Doty of Anson, H. T. Howard of Hawley, and Charlie Davis of Anson. Filing closed Monday. Other county races include Roy Lane for tax assessor collector, W. L. Moore for Precinct 1 commissioner, and Raymond Hollabaugh as county attorney.
The Jones County 4-H Food Show will be held Saturday in Anson with judging at 1 30 p m and a public showing at 2 30 p m. Open to 4 H members ages 9 to 19, the event features four categories across junior and senior divisions including main dishes side dishes breads desserts and snacks and beverages. The Heritage Foods theme invites all to attend.
Stamford Jaycees announce sale of personalized 31 gallon galvanized cans with name or initials and matching haulers. Orders due February 27 with free home delivery March 6 7. Prices include tax totals and multi item packages with proceeds funding Jaycee projects.
Tim Huggins a 1975 Stamford High School graduate tried on his senior ring for the first time in about a year after it was returned over the weekend. Mrs. J T Wyatt who works at the cafeteria found the ring earlier this year on Reynolds Street and kept it safe until ownership could be verified by initials TAH and a check from last year’s annual.
Sidelights of the romantic history of Stamford and this area of Central West Texas will be related at the regular meeting of the Stamford Historical Society Monday night. Members of the society will appear on the program arranged by Tommy Rector, program chairman. The meeting at the Lions Club building begins at seven o'clock.
