Delinquent city taxes paid up to January 31 total $1,226.75 more than the prior year. Current year 1936 roll brings in $44,083.20, 80.3 percent of the roll, while delinquent collections exceed last year due to a tax-back campaign.
Dr Edward Cowles of Park Avenue Hospital told the American Association for the Advancement of Science in Atlantic City that alcohol related deaths rival cancer. He cited misclassification of death records and described the chronic alcoholic's decline and loss of work, urging view of alcoholism as a brain disease not a moral failing.
The Lueders Home Demonstration Club met January 29 at Mrs. J. P. Johnson’s home to plan ornamentals for yards woodlots and roadsides. Miss Gladys Martin home demonstration agent presided and a furniture finishing demonstration was given. Stamford Red Cross relief drive for flood victims in the Ohio and Mississippi valleys totals 413.50 after donations from National headquarters and a Friday night church offering. Contributors include Stamford City Bank, First Baptist Church, local businesses, and numerous individuals.
The January term grand jury of Jones County Texas urges repairs to the county jail instead of a new building, noting financial limits and recommending revamped plumbing bunks repairs to cells bedding and window panes. It calls for orderly law enforcement and citizen help while reporting indictments and witness totals. Buyers to Market Mr and Mrs R B Bryant have gone to Fort Worth and Dallas markets to buy merchandise for Bryant-Link Company returning later in the week.
New automobile license plates reached Stamford and Upshaw is ready to register cars for 1937. Plates have ivory lettering on black, available after paying the license fee. New numbers cannot be used before March 1 and must be on by April 1. Tax remains the same as last year. Registration bureau is Upshaw & Upshaw on West McHarg Avenue.
Reverend John M. Rice of the Church of Christ addressed the Stamford Inn luncheon of the Exchange Club on applying the Golden Rule to business. He outlined the Iron Silver and Golden Rules and their impact, with introductions for Nat Wash and Walter Atwell. Don Ferris led the meeting and urged attendance for a follow up after next Friday’s luncheon.
H A Kight 83 died at 3 am Tuesday at the home of his son C W Kight on East Campbell street after a stroke. Funeral at Claude on Wednesday. Born in West Virginia on January 3 1854 he moved to Texas as a youth and later married Dovie Blanton in 1879. He was a former Methodist minister and partner in Clark and Kight, a Stamford variety store, once among the town’s wealthiest men. Survived by a daughter in Los Angeles a brother in Claude a brother in Orange and a sister in Floydada and by his retired life with his son.
A sacred musical pageant at First Baptist Church raised over 100 for flood relief in the Ohio and Mississippi valleys. Dr Mel G Leaman and Mrs Leaman directed fifty girls in white as an illuminated cross backdrop and Rock of Ages finale. A portion of the program will be repeated Sunday night at the same church.
Rainfall Sunday totalled 0.80 inch, recorded by government gauge keeper W. P. Lyles. It is the only measurable precipitation for January, arriving slowly and soaking the ground and aiding winter grain.
Reports from Stam ford on Groundhog Day indicate no shadow due to cloud cover signaling an early end to winter in the area. Other parts of the county report shadow sightings, suggesting six more weeks of winter. observers urge West Texas residents to judge conditions themselves.
Mr and Mrs Walter McDaniel and Mrs Cecil McDaniel are in Dallas this week buying stock for a new variety store to be operated by the McDaniel families. Mrs Walter McDaniel and Mrs Cecil McDaniel, previously employed at L Schwarz and Company, resigned their work there Saturday.
The West Side Singing Convention of Haskell County moved its meeting to February 20 and 21 to allow the Stamps quartet to attend. President A. D. Lewis announced the change.
Pedro Williams and Crawford Bennett, both of Lueders, were injured in a morning crash near Riverside Park east of Lueders when their car hit a truck from Abi lene Panhandle Refining. Williams suffered chest and facial injuries and a fractured left foot. Bennett had chest injuries and broken ribs and a leg injury. Both were taken to Stamford sanitarium for treatment.
The executive committee fixed March 26 27 for the county meet in Anson with Anson Mou nf I McLeroy elected director general and Thomas Cox named director of extemporaneous speech. Other directors include Anson for several events and Stamford for picture memory.
L. Thurmond Krueger, Texas Unemployment Compensation Commission field representative, will visit Stamford Saturday from 3 to 7 30 p m to help employers file reports and pay taxes. He will meet employers at the Bramford Chamber of Commerce Office in the city Auditorium, with initial contributions due by February 25.
Mrs. Ben Cole gave a detailed hour and a half review of Gone With the Wind for Stamford Women and visitors at the Pierian Club. The event raised 25 cents admission for Carnegie Library. Mrs. Fleming presented a copy to Cole and reviewed God Shakes Creation by David Cohn.
Mrs. Sally Jane Rea, mother of Mrs. J. L. Rucker, dies after weeks of illness. Survivors include three sons Rev J Leonard Rea of Austin Rev T J Rea of Clyde and J B Rea of San Angelo six daughters and numerous grandchildren. Burial requested by Mrs Rea to be beside her husband in Greenwood cemetery Fort Worth.
Percival Grainger the internationally famed pianist will perform in Abilene on February 12 under the Hardin-Simmons University auspices. Original compositions including Country Gardens Molly on the Shore and The Hunter and his Career will be featured.
Acidization of the Qwens-Snebold oil well on the D. AL Ivy farm east of Stamford boosted activity in Shackelford County. After treatment, the well flowed 25 barrels per hour and could reach as high as 100 barrels daily. The well's success spurred new drilling along the Jones Shackelford line toward Lueders and Kingsland pool.
Senator Connally introduces a bill to tax war profits by raising personal and corporate tax rates if war occurs. It outlines exemptions, a 10 percent base rate, and a surtax rising from 6 percent on excess income to 80 percent, with profits drafted for industrial plants and munitions.
Weet Texan children campaign for Dr Ew A Nicholas as Santa Claus in case St Nicholas retires. The welfare worker was introduced to the Hardin-Simmons student body during a chapel period, revealing undercurrent politicking to push the three year old Abilenian for the job.
J B Phamphrey of Old Glory was re elected president as over 300 men from Stonewall, King, Knox, Haskell, Dickena, Kent, Jones and Shackelford counties attended at the city auditorium. W C Church of Merkel was elected vice president, Hill Jr. re elected treasurer, and Paul L Summe assistant secretary treasurer.
The Hick School senior class stages the three act comedy Little Mies Hitch Hiker directed by Mrs. Ben Cole. Cast includes Mildred Hood as Shirley Gary Dorot Lawton and CE F Bunkley Jr as Robert Chalke with Norris Russell Monte Forbes Billy McDonald Dusty Collins and others in Pueblo area roles.
A five year review by the Railway and Freight Employees Association reports 2 195 truck fatalities and numerous injuries in Jones County highway crashes. The toll lists nine local deaths including John Malone and W P Moore amid a roster of injured residents and names several victims and families.
