Thieves looted the rural home of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Benson SW of Stamford in Sunnyside, taking clothing bedding furniture and curtain rods while leaving the cook stove and dining table. The Jan 23 night burglary pierced a window and suspects remain unfound.
Editor notes Dr. Fletcher continues his India series with a portrayal of the Sepoy Rebellion at Cawnpore. The report recounts a British commander's blunder, mutiny among native troops, and a siege that left four hundred British forces outnumbered amid heat, hunger, and thinning ammunition.
A large singing event is planned at the First Baptist Church next Monday night at 7 30 led by V O Stamps of Dallas. Singers from Stamford and nearby areas are expected to attend with performances by the Hamlin quartet Freddie Martin and the Baize Brothers Urphy Audie and Novel Batve.
Tire dealers and other business leaders from about a dozen towns attended a Firestone District meeting and banquet at the Stamford Inn. About 65 to 75 men participated, with PD F. Prewit and Tom Gaston organizing. Dallas Firestone officials Louie Randell Hudson and George Mitchell led the afternoon program starting at 3 30. A banquet followed at 6 50 with Judge C F E Coombes master of ceremonies and speeches by J R Pratt F M Locke W B Tayman and Judge Coombes. Represented towns included Spur Haskell Dickens Aspermont Swenson Rule Jayton Anson Cisco and Abilene.
Sagerton announces a two day farm short course in agriculture horticulture and home economics on February 22 and 23. The International Harvester extension staff will provide speakers and sessions run morning afternoon and night. The free program in the school auditorium will dismiss local students on education day with other schools invited. Execut ive chairman R H Robertson coordinates the event which is one of six West Texas towns chosen this year.
The pastor at the Methodist church will present thirty views of Babylon, old and modern, on Sunday. He describes Babylon as a boastful ancient capital with a great wall and gates, famed religious rites, and wealth, set in a sermon illustrated by films from within the ruined city. Attendance is urged for a peak event in the Eden Land series.
Chas Sledge addressed the Exchange Club at noon last Friday, reviewing radio development from Marconi's experiments. His talk formed the centerpiece of the meeting program and offered insights into early radio progress.
The Stamford Home Demonstration Club will meet Tuesday afternoon February 16 at the Home Economics building with Miss Sue Bonner in charge of the meeting.
Edward Earl Rowntree Jr., eight, died at 6 50 pm after being struck by a truck in front of 309 North Swenson Avenue. Clifford Brow ton of Haskell drove the vehicle to the sanitarium where he succumbed to a fractured skull. The driver was not at fault. Pallbearers included Leslie Larehe and Albert Ivy. burial in Highland Cemetery. Survivors: parents Mr and Mrs Ke Rowntree Stamford. brother James Dudley age 6. grandparents Mr and Mrs Ke Rowntree Stamford and Mr and Mrs J T Hicks Memphis. Out of town relatives attended.
Sid G Castles of Anson declares his candidacy for Jones county tax assessor subject to the Democratic primaries. He has 47 years in the county, 40 in Anson, served as deputy in the assessor's office, worked at a local bank, and 15 years in real estate. He plans to visit every voter before the election.
Fred W. Taylor announces his candidacy for re election as public weigher of the Stamford precinct. He is in his second term and appeals for Democratic primary support, citing honesty efficiency and satisfaction of those served.
Mrs Annie Laura Vaughn a Naz arene preacher will speak at the tabernacle in Bunkerhill northwest of Stamford on Sunday at 3 p m. She will preach there regularly throughout the year.
Turner J. Hulsey, a seven year Marine veteran now living in Stamford, recalls service in Shanghai and shares war scenario views. He wagers water and air battles would define a US Japan conflict, praises the US Navy, critiques French troops in Shanghai, and notes Chinese soldiers cease fighting by day then resume at night. He grew up in Peck and Aspermont and once worked for the Nepermont Star before settling in Stamford.
Stamford American Legion post reports fifteen local jobs found last week as part of a national drive to reduce unemployment. Road work between Stamford and New Hop is cited, with weekly updates expected, amid a broader wartime inspired campaign led from New York City to put one million unemployed to work.
Ernest Ager, a Malta native, faces a suit for spousal support. He testifies he was married by a foreign minister and did not understand the ceremony's meaning.
County Judge Tom Smiley of Karnes City Texas sues the San Antonio Express for damages claiming the paper miscalled him a Republican. The suit relates to coverage over days before the selection of an open seat for Congressman Harry Wurzbach. Smiley was an unsuccessful candidate in the election.

In Jonesboro Arkansas February 43 a church led by Rev Joe Morris hosted a one month effort to secure Morrie for a speaking engagement. The service included a Sunday School study on Matthew and a discussion of verses 16 to 34. Several out of town visitors attended and bereaved families received invitations.
The First National Bank in Stamford is restructured with 75000 in new capital and surplus, strengthening its financial footing. It will operate under a new charter but keep most directors and officers, awaiting a new charter next week.
Donations from Stamford Community Chest totaled 27 50 from Stamford State Bank employees and a beef donation from C. ¢ Care. The beef will be canned next Wednesday February 10 by the Stamford Home Demonstration Club led by Miss Sade Bonner under C Jobson and at Mrs. L E Adams home east of the el. Members urge any worker to help and ask attendees to arrive by 9 00 am with lunch, while those unable to stay all day may join later in the afternoon for demonstrations.
Preparations underway for a public program in Stamford marking the 200th birthday of George Washington. The event at City Auditorium on Monday February 22 at 7:30 p m will be led by the American Legion with Rotary Club Muse Club Mechani Club and others taking a leading role. A tentative program was adopted but some speakers including the principal speaker remain to be confirmed as out of town. The program aligns with the national Washington Bicentennial Celebration.
A letter from C W Warburton director of extension work states that production loans under the Reconstruction Finance Act are not yet available as regulations are not complete. If loans are issued the procedure will mirror last year's government loans, Warburton says.
