About 35 girls from five local troops prepare to begin the annual cookie sale Friday at 4 p.m. in the West Texas Girl Scout Council running February 4 to 19. Five cookie varieties will be offered at $1.25 per box with booths at local businesses.
Two fires last week caused extensive damage in Stamford. Stamford Interiors at 109 N Swenson suffered heavy heat and smoke damage. a mobile home two and a half miles north on US 277 was described as total loss due to oven-started fire. The Little Gallery and Carl's Pool also suffered smoke damage. Fire Chief Bill Lawson cited undetermined cause for the business blaze and a likely oven ignition for the mobile home.
City council agenda shows spring elections planned for April 2 with four city posts, four hospital seats, and three school board slots. Incumbents remain noncommittal while some officials hint at reelection. hospital board members give no firm plans.
Frantz Howard 28 native of Abilene joins the department as town patrolman succeeding Gerald Bryant who was moved to Victoria Howard raised in Clyde a 1967 Clyde High School graduate attended Cisco Junior College and Hardin S Simmons University served in the Marines 1967 to 1971 stationed in several locations and worked at Aileens Abilene before joining the Department of Public Safety He is married to Brenda Condra they have one daughter Kristal 3 and reside at 801 BE Reynolds Howard's parents live in Hawley Jones County
Governor Dolph Briscoe announced Monday that Bill Longley of Stamford, a drive-in grocery store owner and Democratic chairman of Jones County, is appointed to the State Commission for the Blind to a six year term. He replaces Irving M. Axelrod. Also joining the commission is Sam D. Millsap of San Antonio, succeeding Thurman Dobbins for a six year term.
The Lions Club launches an annual subscription drive for the Stamford American starting Monday February 14. Members will handle new and renewal orders and earn a commission, with proceeds supporting the club’s civic projects.
Stamford Chamber of Commerce hires Thomas E. Andrews as manager effective Feb 1. A native of Enis and Ennis High School graduate, he served 20 years in the U S Air Force retiring as master sergeant. He has led civic groups in Abilene and Breckenridge and is married with a married daughter.
The 1977 Texas Cowboy Reunion plans were released with July 1 2 and 4 dates for the 47th TCR. Jim West is named director succeeding Henry G Andrews Sr who died March 4 of last year. New rodeo chairmen are Bob Harrison John Harrell and Gary Mathis with several other long time officials listed and officers unchanged.
