First Loans Approved for Aspermont Small Business Center

The Aspermont Small Business Development Center reports 87 loan applications in a 15 county area. SBA representatives will meet Thursday night to review first loan applications and funding follows approval. Loans up to fifteen thousand dollars with a five and a half percent interest may run as long as 15 years. Homer Long of Paducah attended.

488 Poll Taxes Sold in Stamford

On the final day of the sale 263 poll taxes were issued at the Stamford Chamber of Commerce, bringing Stamford totals to 488 with four exemptions. Jones County reported 2838 poll taxes sold with 59 exemptions and one registration issued.

Pin Sale Rescheduled by Camp Fire Girls

Snow and freezing weather in Stamford prompted the Camp Fire Girls to move the March of Dimes pin sale to this Saturday in downtown Stamford. Stamford High School Student Council talent show for March of Dimes moved to February 19 in the high school auditorium. Mothers March date not yet set but likely this week.

Cotton Growers Officials Meet In Washington

Charles Stenholm executive vice president of Rolling Plains Cotton Growers returned from Washington with Dr. J. C. Gaines of Texas A&M Terry Julian Johnny Hansen J. B. Cooper and Jones County directors. They discussed boll weevil infestation findings by 31 county survey teams to the Agriculture Research Service and met with congressmen and USDA officials. A directors meeting in Sweetwater began a work plan to be finalized next week.

Abilene Philharmonic Opens Season Monday Night

The Abilene Philharmonic Orchestra directed by Gerald Kiger will give the first of four concerts Monday night in the new high school auditorium. Tickets cost 8 dollars, on sale from Rotarians, junior class members, or local firms. The program includes Berlioz Roman Carnival Overture, Haydn Symphony No. 104, Bizet L Arlesienne Suite No. 1, and Theron Kirk Baile Frontier themed to border music.

CofC Membership Drive Opens in Stamford on Monday

The Stamford Chamber of Commerce launches a membership drive aiming to recruit at least 350 business firms and individuals. A kickoff breakfast at Nat's Cafe is set for 7 a.m. Monday, with ten committee members listing goals across industrial, agricultural, civic, and governmental programs.

Carhartt Expands Stamford Plant With 30 New Workers

Carhartt of Texas in Stamford adds thirty employees to its local plant, increasing staff to just over 100. New positions support a second sewing line for ladies blouses and dresses. Weekly payroll rises to about 1500, totaling around 5000. A two ton truck transports garments to Dallas and fabric back to Stamford. Employees hail from Stamford and nearby towns.

1966 Vehicle Licenses On Sale in Jones County

New 1966 auto truck and other vehicle license plates went on sale Tuesday in Jones County and will run until April 1. County tax assessor-collector A. J. French said plates are available at Anson courthouse Turner-Nail Insurance in Hamlin and Enis Bishop Electric in Stamford. City hall in Lueders will offer plates within the week.

Minor Accidents Here Are Due To Icy Streets

Police report five accidents in Stamford from Friday to Tuesday blamed on icy streets. Two car crashes Friday caused minor damage, none injured, at Reynolds and S Swenson and West McHarg. Saturday saw two more on Me Haig and Rotan Wetherbee. Tuesday a crash at Campbell and N Anson involved two autos. Snow totals exceeded an inch with moisture around three inches and near zero temperatures.

Charles Anderson and Farris Dickerson were crowned football King and Queen at the Stamford Bulldogs Pep Squad banquet held at the Cliff House. Guest speaker Curly Hays lauded the team’s pride and tradition as new Pep Squad officers and cheerleaders were introduced alongside retiring officers.

The Stamford High School senior play The Mouse That Roared was postponed by bad weather and is rescheduled for Thursday night at 8. Directed by Mrs. H. G. Andrews Jr. tickets are available from class members or at the door.

Roadside Parks Planned Along Highway 277 North of Anson

Jones County will gain two roadside parks or rest stations on Highway 277 within a year. Officials announced in Austin that the sites lie between Stamford and Anson about four miles north of Anson, with land bought from Ruth M. Bryan. County Judge Leon Thurman says one park may be north of Anson and the other south, on land north of Red Mud Creek along the highway.
