March of Dimes total nears $2000 with events planned

Stamford residents contribute to the March of Dimes drive with $830 from Rotary Exchange Jaycees committees and $420 from the Mothers March. The Wishing Well, radio telethon and wheel barrow push event are part of efforts as envelopes and mail donations continue.

Eyes To The Future Contest Identifies Stamford Leaders

Twenty five dollars in prizes offered for contest matching cartoon portraits of Stamford business and professional leaders. Entries must be postmarked by February 8, with rules emphasizing neatness and correct spelling, open to the public, and results announced February 24.

High School Band To Be Honored At Banquet

The Stamford Band will be honored by the Rooster Club at a Thursday banquet for Stamford High School. The event is set for 7 30 p m in the high school cafeteria with an entertaining program and aims to become an annual affair, said Brooke Early club president.

Chili Supper at Stamford Club Rescheduled

Mr. Lee Walker announced the Chili supper at Stamford Country Club has been postponed from Saturday night to February 26.

Four Stamford youths injured in head on collision

Four Stamford youths were seriously injured when a head on collision occurred near the College Lake area on Wednesday night January 26 at about 8 40. The wreck demolished both cars and all four were taken to the Stamford Sanitarium. Jerrell Dee Smith 15 suffered a broken right leg hip region a broken collar bone a lacerated ear and other injuries. Jack Wayne Goree 17 in the other car was reported improving after treatment. Steve Watts 15 and Larry McNeil 15 were treated and released with injuries including a broken right hand and facial cuts respectively. Highway patrolmen Arthur Dyson and I A Chambers investigated.

Stamford Day set at Fort Worth Stock Show

Saturday February 5 marks Stamford Day at the Fort Worth Fat Stock Show and Southwestern Exposition. Stamford sponsor Pat Merriott returns to compete in the barrel race finals with 24 invited ranch girls, while Miss Price of Addington Oklahoma is introduced as the sponsor winner from the Texas Cowboy Reunion. Dub Sims of Pairst Creek wins reserve championship with steer Mr Haskell. Hereford and Angus champions compete for top show honors. Stamford high school voc classes enter calves and locals attend the event.

Food Handlers School Set in Stamford Next Week

A free five day food handlers school runs Feb 7 to Feb 11 at Stamford High School from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. daily. The Texas State Department of Health and Stamford Chamber of Commerce conduct the program with daily attendance earning a Sanitary Foodhandling certificate. Topics include food handling bacteria contamination and sanitation.

Automobile licenses planned for February 1 in Stamford will be unavailable for a few days. They can be purchased at Upshaw and Upshaw as soon as stock arrives. I. E. Upshaw said he expects delivery before the end of the week.

Womanless Wedding Dazzles Stamford as Parental Show

A group of Stamford men present a womanless wedding in the high school auditorium. Sponsored by the Junior-Senior High School Parent-Teacher Association, the shows run Monday and Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. with student 25 cent tickets and adult 50 cent tickets.

The Country Club hosts its annual spring style show with luncheon starting 1 p.m. on February 10. D. E. Prewit of Stamford sold his 25 year stake in Prewit Motor Co. Johnny Grissom and L. E. Cene Prewit of Hamlin become owners renaming the business Grissom and Prewit Motor Co. Gene Prewit stays in Hamlin. Johnny runs Stamford operation. The agency sells Chevrolets on Plymouths and also handles Philco appliances and Seiberling tires.

Billy Mayfield Wins First in Stamford Cotton Contest

Billy Mayfield topped the Stamford Chamber of Commerce cotton growing contest with a net profit of 168.64 from five acres producing 1208 pounds lint and 1828 pounds seed. Zenald Nauert of Avoca placed second with 424.22, Lester Putman third, Wayne Carlton fourth. prizes: 100 60 40 20. Checks were given at the Rotary Club meeting.

Wheelbarrow Drive Aims Dimes For March of Dimes

Stamford sponsors launch a wheelbarrow fundraiser on Saturday afternoon to raise dimes for the March of Dimes. Billy Davis will push the wheelbarrow starting near the Avoca highway by the radio station at 2 PM. Donations collected along the route in the business district and North Swenson Avenue support the charity.

Mayor G C Carothers and Aldermen John Reese and Rylah Gleaton filed for re election this week. Jack Tidwell may run again for police chief with a decision soon. Bob Miller is a potential candidate.
