Only two solicitors filed complete reports as the Community Chest drive started Tuesday. Dr. Southard says more time is needed and asks solicitors to recanvass territories to reach those who have not yet donated. If unable to give, checks may be mailed to the Chamber of Commerce or to Dr. Southard.
A man suspected of hijacking B. F. Fulton of Haskell Saturday night January 18 was arrested by Stamford police last Friday. Fulton was held up one mile north of Stamford late Saturday night and relieved of 69 dollars. The case will come before the grand jury of Haskell at an early date. Miss Rabel Hamphill of Crane Missouri received a postal card five years three months and two days after it was mailed by a friend in El Paso Texas.
The W C O Auxiliary to United Charities met at First Baptist with Mrs. C C Miller presiding. R C Thomas was elected finance manager to replace the late Ray Rector. Food and clothing distributions are scheduled Saturdays with joint Red Cross and United Charities committees. Resolutions of respect for Rector were adopted. Next meeting May 29 at Central Christian Church.
The home of Curly Crump on East Oliver Street was practically destroyed by a blaze that started about 8 30 Wednesday night in a closet. With no one at home a small dog perished in the flames. Firefighters fought the fire from above but smoke hindered their efforts. the house and contents are heavily damaged and insured.
Rev. Sam Morris reports a strong last Sunday and anticipates a larger crowd for Sunday. Rev. Roy Kemp of Fort Worth will teach the Men's Bible Class and preach in the pastor's absence in Lubbock. He will discuss Crossing Jordan on God's Ferryboat and The Three Crosses.
The Liberty New Hope Home Demonstration Club will meet February 9 with Mrs. Floyd Brigham. Miss Sue Bonner the home demonstration agent will attend and present demonstration on planting small plants.
G. H. McKinney and Mr. and Mrs. R. B. Bryant depart early in the week to purchase merchandise for the Bryant Link Company stores. Mrs. Bryant will remain in Dallas while the others proceed to Saint Louis for ten to fifteen days. Bill Rave accompanies the party to Saint Louis.
Dr. J D Sandefer president of Simmons University Abilene spoke at a county wide United Forces for Prohibition meeting at St Johns Methodist church warning that repeal of the 18th Amendment could occur soon. He argued prohibition enforcement was strong but wet forces faced obstacles and urged women to show courage against repeal.
Ten percent of the Reconstrucion Finance Corporation funds allotted to Stamford for February employment were apportioned to Lueders and Avoca. Stamford totals 5393.16 with 359.54 to Lueders and 179.77 to Avoca. Expenditures support Texa Cowboy Reunion grounds Harmon Park and East Reynolds street gravelling.
Lueders Baptist Encampment plans a July 11 to 23 gathering. Board of Directors met January 26 with C A Powell presiding. Attendees included church leaders from Abilene Graham Cisco Abilene and Simmons University among others.
Dr E P Bunkley was announced Thursday as a candidate for Stamford mayor in the upcoming city election held on the first Tuesday in April. C F Upshaw seeks re election as alderman place 4 and C M Francis runs for alderman place 5. Mayor J K Brady and George E Pryor both announced non candidacy. G G Flournoy, chief of police, plans re election with a formal statement next week.
A series of seven sermons by Rev. C. R. Hooton opens Sunday night at the Methodist Church on Jesus Christ’s reconstruction program for today. The schedule includes a Sunday morning communion service, Lord's Supper, and a 9:45 a.m. church school, with Dr. Sander and countywide rally noted.
