Stamford shifts from a record freezing spell to milder weather with temperatures rising to 35 degrees by Sunday. Ice caused outages in Avoca areas and disrupted highways while four women were admitted to Stamford Sanitarium for fractures from falls. Wheat prospects and underground season index high for January.
Stamford Rotary Club hosts annual Ladies Night at the Country Club Tuesday night. Wives of deceased Rotarians will be honored guests with Richard Harris of the First Wichita National Bank as speaker. Harry Haynes presides, with flower gifts and school musicians under W. F. E. Mayes directing.
R R Kelley manager of Stamford Cotton Oil Mill entered the mayoral race for the post to be vacated April 4 by W B Harrison. Also seeking the job is Ryland Gleaton assistant manager of Stamford Production Credit Association amid council service. Wade Watts seeks re election to two more years on the council. Chief B Q Cooper also seeks another term with no opponent yet announced.
Senator David W. Ratliff of Stamford in the 24th district is chair of one committee and vice chair of another, with 12 more as a member in the current session. He leads the labor and management relations panel and serves as vice chair of the interstate cooperation group, plus roles in agriculture and livestock, claims, education, finance, insurance, legislative, gubernatorial nominations, oil and gas, state affairs, water and conservation committees.
The CES will entertain all Masons and their wives with a covered dish dinner at the Masonic Hall on February 10 at 6 30 p m.
One Stamford shopping center sees remodeling at Hassen on the west side with a new front and recessed window. Penney’s interior overhaul aims to improve merchandising displays, Dean Robertson says work starts Feb 1. Bunkley’s Drug Store recently updated lighting and ceiling. post office roof replacement underway. bakery space may be converted for a future L. Phillips furniture store.
Jones County commissioners will hear a full plan for a multi county bookmobile route. The plan estimates annual costs around 7500 dollars and requires funding through additional taxes or higher rates, says County Judge H G Andrews.

The Stonewall County Livestock Show will be held Feb 4 at the Aspermont livestock barn. Stockers must be in place by 10:00. Judging begins at 10:00 for hogs, 11:00 for sheep, and 11:00 PM for beef steers and heifers. About 75 animals compete for 750 dollars in prize money with James Normal of Fisher County judging.
Melvin Garrett age 19 of Stamford pleaded guilty before District Judge Owen Thomas to theft and received a two year penitentiary term. He admitted burglary of a service station on Anson and drew another two year term. Garrett and Edgvar West stole a car owned by Charles Lankford from his home on December 4 and wrecked it south of San Angelo. West later escaped and was recaptured in Abilene. West has a prior criminal record. Celeste Walter, 19, pleaded guilty to forgery from kiting a check for a magazine subscription. She received a four year suspended sentence. Carl Pruitt, 20, of Stamford, was given two years for burglary of the Lueders school. Two Abilene women received two year terms for burglaries at Anson, and a North Carolina man got five years for burglary at Hawley. Two Killeen men drew sentences for felony theft in southern county. A woman who forged and passed a $35 check at Rotan received two years.
Two Stamford women were arrested this week and charged with driving while intoxicated. One resident of Leeders was involved in a Jan 28 accident near the Hamilton Street underpass, hitting a vehicle driven by Andy Moreland. The Hamlin woman was picked up Jan 2 near the rodeo grounds on Highway 277.
Three Stamford boys, all 15, were arrested and turned over to Juvenile Judge H. G. Andrews Jr. Their cases will be heard this month. They are charged with breaking street lights and school windows, with two boys involved in each act and one in both. Two boys attend school, the third has not been attending, according to Chief B Q Cooper.
Bobby Joe Calhoun who was seriously hurt returning from National Guard camp had arm surgery at Brooke General Hospital last week. He phoned his parents Mr and Mrs Jr Calhoun Sunday but the outcome is not yet known.
Muddy conditions Monday night limited Stamford Mothers March to about half the town. Mrs. I. F. Hudson reports 394 dollars raised with plans to finish the drive Thursday or Friday. Canvassed areas left envelopes. other efforts yielded 108.60 from coin receptacles. Stamford chair Johnny Webb notes Sub Deb Club and lapel pin sales contributed, with more from mail solicitations and downtown canvassing planned. Rotary and ROKR support involved Ray Kinney. Jaycees schedule wheelbarrow derby on Fel 2% to split funds between the March of Dimes and the Heart Fund.
Fire Chief Dick Rowland tells Stamford city council the volunteer and paid department answered 106 alarms in 1960. Trash caused 11 alarms with $61 178 in insured fire losses, up from $44 288 in 1959. Three volunteer captain-led companies, drills twice monthly, and added a 1959 truck at about $15 000.

Bill Ferguson, longtime Stamford resident, becomes distributor for Cosden products in Stamford. He has leased the J. M. McDonald Oil Co at 512 S. Swenson. Ferguson was formerly employed at the United Food Store and will continue to carry oils, lubricants, and fuels including gasoline.
A drive to finish raising funds for Boy Scout programs in the area will start Tuesday with workers meeting at Central Presbyterian Church Zeelock for coffee and doughnuts. About $2,000 of a $3,000 quota has been raised. many individuals and firms remain to be solicited. Robert and Hebecca Ratliff, children of Mr and Mrs Da vid W Ratliff Jr, stay with grandparents in Lubbock while parents are in California.
Everyone is invited to attend a Jones County Singing on Sunday at 2 p m at the Foursquare Church in Stamford.
Congressman Jim Wright spoke at Nat's Cafe in Stamford to about 25 locals outlining his bid for the U S Senate. He urged representing small and large towns, criticized big business and farms, urged paying the national debt, and said America should recapture initiative and image. Wright is among 18 filing for the senate seat vacated by Lyndon Johnson with the election set for April 4.

A 16 year old Stamford boy was arrested by Police Chief B Q Cooper and handed to Knox County sheriff on forgery charges. He had earlier used San Baize name to pass forged checks in Stamford. He was released on parole by County Judge H G Andrews Jr and now faces further forgery charges at Munday.
Tax inspectors in Anson and Stamford report a surge of payments as voters rushed to meet the poll tax deadline. In Anson about 600 receipts issued. Stamford’s chamber office tallies 419. a VFW supper added 24 receipts. French estimates 2700 qualified voters this year, about 1500 fewer than last year.
Newborns reported include a son William born January 25 to Mr and Mrs Thomas Gray of Stamford and a son Darell born January 25 to Mr and Mrs L 8 Cook of Stamford. A January 27 birth of a son Ronald to Mr and Mrs Glendale Rand of Stamford is listed.
