Babson predicts 1949 will bring lower total business and farm income than 1948 with softer profits across industries. He foresees a rise in inventories, possible price controls, limited debt, and gradual shifts in stock and bond markets influenced by wage dynamics and government policy.
National income falls five percent while farm income declines forty five percent. Bituminous coal drops five percent and anthracite ten percent. Crude oil production rises three percent and steel output gains five percent. Anticipated items indicate a ten percent increase.
A forecast notes higher quality goods on counters in 1949 and many cut price sales of inferior foods. It predicts retail sales to be near 1948 in value, with unit volume down, foreign trade stable, more foreign credits to businesses, and ongoing war talk with no World War III expected. It cites wage and price balance as key to healthy business and mentions Taft-Hartley Act changes, with wage increases needed before price rises and unemployment risks linked to high prices.
Rev. M. C. Turpin will preach at Central Christian Church during morning worship. He recently completed a B D at Brite College in connection with Texas Christian University and served as chaplain during the war. He will be accompanied to Stamford by his wife who was educational director for First Church at Tyler.

The Stamford American Legion Auxiliary invites members to a luncheon at the Wooten Hotel on January 4 at noon. National President Mrs. Lora Goody and Department President Mrs. O FE Dewey will attend. Stamford women may reserve through Mrs. J B Tabor, the local president.
The Stamford American Legion Auxiliary and Jaycees distributed 16 boxes during Christmas with 48 children and 21 shut ins benefiting from the aid.
Bits of Mews list numerous holiday trips and gatherings as families from Stamford and nearby towns travel to Forsan Dallas Coleman Abilene Fort Worth Rankin Rockwall Sherman and elsewhere to spend Christmas with relatives. Patterns include return trips to Fort Worth and Rankin and visits with in laws and friends, with several students and professionals noted.
Nel Austin of Austin visits her parents Mr and Mrs H P Austin appears in town for a short stay with family.
Mr and Mrs W E Whittington hosted as holiday visitors their daughter Kathleen Whittington of St Worth and son William Whittington an accounting teacher at Texas Tech Lubbock. They traveled to Giddings Austin and Ft Worth before returning to Lubbock joined by Mrs Whittington's brother W F Kirkpatrick and his daughter Frankie of Crowell.
James F. Donally of the Soil Conservation Service Abilene spoke to the Jaycees at the Snack Bar on Wednesday. He urged soil care as foundational to civilization and illustrated points with a large picture. James Lindsey introduced the speaker Ted Myers presided, with nominating committee reports planned for the next meeting. Visitors included J B Garrett Roy Moritz Roland Kelley and Powell Shytles.
The Scoutmasters training course ended Monday night with outdoor cooking and camp making. Participants included A. C. Braun H. H. Dunklin and King Santy of Avoca M. E. Overton John R. Watson Jr John Thomas Howard Montgomery and Durwood Livinwood of Paint Creek Community. Earlier graduates from Stamford include F. E. Roe Reid Jack Dotson J. O. Calhoun I. A. Russell J. H. Howard and Rae Eastland.
Morning worship at First Baptist Church will be broadcast on KDWT during January. Rev. Miles B. Hayes announces Sunday School opens 15 minutes earlier at 9:30 a.m. Glen Sutton urges attendance as the New Year begins. A watch night service starts New Year’s Eve at 7:15 p.m. Training Union meets 30 minutes before the service.
Maurice Salmon of Arlington spent Christmas here with his sister Mrs. M E Elliott. He formerly lived here. Mr A and M Dewane Elliott and their son accompanied him back to Arlington and visited Mrs. Elliott's relatives.
A Christmas Day gathering at Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Duncan marked their fiftieth sixth wedding anniversary and the birthday of Mr. Duncan. The event drew relatives from Abi lene Haskell Huston Austin and local areas, including the Duncans and Connells, with many family members attending.
About 80 people took part in a coon hunt Monday night at Camp Tonkawa near Buffalo Gap. Ed Sorrell and Jack McClendon of Stamford led the event with Camp Ranger Ben Summers. Scoutmaster Jack Dotson brought 20 participants from Stamford along with other Stamford scouts and Dale Hewley. Paint Creek Troop contributed six boys and Haskell seven boys.
Candy Meyers receives gifts direct from Santa Claus land as Staft Set Meyers, stationed at Fairbanks Alaska, flies over the North Pole with his wife Jane McDonald and daughter Candy. They arrived for a holiday visit and will depart around January 6 returning to Seattle.
Rotary Club luncheon featured impromptu acts led by program chair Jack Norman and sergeant at arms Jimmy Moreland. Ribbons awarded for sixth place fat stock show. performances included songs by Ted Myers Frank Ramey Swede Swenson and Jack Norman.
The body of Pvt. James R. Kirkland is being returned from Holland for re burial. He was killed September 30, 1944 while serving with the Glider Infantry. Burial will take place at the home cemetery near Paxton in Shelby County. He was a brother of Natios C. Kirkland of Stamford and lived there with his brother before enlisting. Survived by three sisters Mrs. G R Keating, Mrs. J O Magnes of Stamford and Mrs S C Teal of Carlsbad New Mexico, and his grandparents at Paxton.
County officials elected in the Democratic primaries will take oath at the county courthouse with the County Judge administering. Charles E. Brownfield Jr. is the only new official as county attorney, while Henry Cook of Stamford becomes Precinct 2 commissioner, succeeding John Massey. Re-elected officials start new terms, including Sheriff Bill Dannody and County Judge Roger Q. Garrett Jr, among others. Louis T. Johnson becomes Democratic chairman for Jones County.
Family and friends visited the W. T. West home in Stamford during Christmas day. Attendees included J. J. West and relatives from Monahans, W. S. Thomas and daughters from Midland, C. T. West and son, H. L. Terrell and family, J. Guillett from Paint Creek, P. E. B. Thompson and daughters, Billy West and son, J. T. Caffey and family, Jay West, Mrs. Cannon and daughter, Cody Thompson and daughter, Otis Wacdilll of Addison, P E Panthey and daughter of Fort Worth, Bob Posey of Corpus Christi, Edwin Terrell of Abilene, Helen Terrell and Hazel West of Stamford, Jerry Hansen of Plainview, R. A. Gillespie of Rockdale, and Durwood Coltey of Stamford.
Dr and Mrs J H Rutherford hosted holiday guests including their son Dr Joe Rutherford and wife from Wace Mr and Mrs Hallarvn son Durrett of Dallas Mr and Mrs Nile Shaw and aor John and Mr and Mrs Eddie Cornelius all of Abilene They were joined on Christmas Day by Mr and Mrs Ben Cole and family of this city.
