Turbeville Rites Held For Local Cotton Buyer

Charley S. Turbeville 70 died Tuesday at 4 pm in Veterans Administration Hospital Big Spring after a illness. He lived at 1312 London and was a World War I veteran and former cotton buyer. Funeral services at First Baptist Church in Clyde with burial in Clyde Cemetery. Survivors include Hazle Turbeville of Stamford and kin.

Francis to retire as WTU district manager in West Texas

West Texas Utilities Co veteran K. K. Francis will retire January 1 after 25 years as district manager. A farewell coffee at Nat's Cafe drew Abilene and Stamford officials including Russell Crownover who will succeed him here, with Green-to-Abilene moves also announced.

Crider Low Bid For Post Office Expansion

Lawrence Crider of Stamford, a cement contractor, was the low bidder among six on enlarging the delivery facilities at the post office. Bids ranged from 8 643 10 to 11 400. Plans call for concrete paving east of the post office on federal land, widening the Wetherbee Street driveway by four feet each side and resurfacing. No work order has been issued yet.

Five Bulldogs Named To All-District Teams

The Stamford Bulldogs place three on the GAA All District offensive team and two on the defensive team. Winters dominates the first team with five offensive and three defensive selections. Stamford also earns honorable mention with multiple players listed across ends, tackles, guards, center, quarterbacks, and backs.

Funeral Rites Held Tuesday For Mrs Hullum

Rites for Mrs Edna Hullum longtime Jones County resident were held at Kinney Funeral Chapel with Rev D A Watson Rev M J Sublett and Rev M O Rowe officiating. Burial was in Highland Cemetery. Survivors include three daughters two sons three brothers and several grandchildren and great grandchildren. Pallbearers listed.

Charley Sorrell, 85, Jones County Resident, Dies

Charley W. Sorrell, 85, longtime Jones County resident since 1896, died at Stamford Memorial Hospital after a long illness. Born November 21, 1877 in Jasper City Alabama, he married Etta Stevenson in 1900 at Calvary Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, two sons, four daughters, 14 grandchildren and 30 great grandchildren, plus siblings. Funeral arrangements by Kinney Funeral Home with burial at New Hope Cemetery.

Former Librarian Lora Haynie Dies at Snyder

Lora Mae Haynie 70 served 24 years as Stamford Carnegie Library librarian retiring in 1952. She died Tuesday at Cogdell Memorial Hospital Snyder after living in Georgetown and Snyder. Survived by a daughter Mrs Alfred Lieb Snyder a son T Jeff Haynie Abilene three grandchildren and one great grandchild. Graveside service at 2 pm in Stamford Highland Home Cemetery with burial by Highland Home Funeral Home and memorial service 10 am Thursday at 37th Street Church of Christ Snyder.

Avoca FHA Girls Visit Senior Citizens for Cookie Boxes

Avoca High School FHA girls will visit senior citizens of Avoca to present decorated cookie boxes as part of an annual project. Unaddressed Christmas cards mailed to Abilene State Hospital will be used by patients. Thursday morning FHA and FFA chapters join a breakfast at the Home Economics building hosted by Charles Stenholm and Mrs. Nita Goss with swifts to be exchanged.

Fire Destroys Small Trailer on West Handlan Street

A Wednesday morning fire destroyed a small trailer house in the 200 block of West Handlan Street. The occupants, Latin Americans, used the trailer as sleeping quarters and one resident lost savings from a purse. The Ministerial Alliance bought a bus ticket for him back to McAllen in the lower Rio Grande Valley.

City officials announced downtown streets are swept every night during the holiday season. A recent sweeper breakdown had delayed cleaning, but the backlog is cleared and nightly sweeps continue.
