Stamford High Teen Dies After Gym Class Collapse

Gerald W. Goree 17, a Stamford High School junior, collapsed during a tag game in gym. He died about 1 40 p m, likely from a heart attack, despite CPR and oxygen. Funeral at Stamford Church of Christ Thursday at 2 30 p m. Burial in Highland Cemetery. He was born May 3 1936 and lived in Stamford most of his life. He worked at Safeway and is survived by his parents, a brother, and grandparents.

Jones County Draws Cutchback In 54. Acreage

Amid farmer protests, Jones County 1954 cotton acreage allotments were cut from about 160000 acres to 114568 for the coming season. Farmers argued past three years drought reduced planted cotton should count, as nearby counties receive varying allotments.

Third Graders of Reynolds Entertain At PTA Meeting

Reynolds Street school third graders formed a living Christmas tree for the Christmas program at the Reynolds PTA meeting held Wednesday at the high school auditorium. President Mrs Bland Harrison presided with program chair Mrs George Rollins directing choral speaking and songs.

McCann Named Acting Judge in Corporation Court

A. J. McCann, city fireman, was named acting corporation court judge at a city council meeting Friday while Rev Sam Young recovers from a heart attack. The council also approved 25 percent city employee Christmas bonuses for one month’s pay and 10 percent for staff with less than six months’ service. An ordinance to reinstate council service pay was drafted, with salaries up to 10 dollars monthly for councilmen and 50 dollars for the mayor, suspended in 1951. Mrs. C. N. Stamford Gins Slow After Strong Cotton Harvest

Stamford four gins had gin ned 8613 bales of this year's crop by 4:30 p m Wednesday. estimates show about 75 percent of the crop. Ginning is tapering off though the crop is better than early hopes. Stamford Compress has handled over 30 000 bales and averages 54 516 bales per year, with Steve Bennett noting they handled just under 12 000 bales last year.

Bring a Guest Not a Gift to Calvary Baptist Christmas Program

Calvary Baptist Church invites the public to its first Christmas program in the new auditorium at 801 South Wethern Street. Pastor Rev. David Kuykendall asks attendees to bring guests rather than gifts and notes the tree and gift exchange will be omitted. Classes will host home Christmas parties with gift exchanges. The managers and bookkeepers of Group 4 Texas Electric Cooperatives will meet in Stamford on Thursday with about 40 attendees. x-Stamford Man Dies In Brownwood

William Lee Box of Brownwood age 77 died Friday in a Brownwood hospital after living in Stamford for years. Funeral was held Saturday at Brownwood with burial Mt Hope cemetery Anson. He served as a pioneer mail carrier between Anson and Haskell and worked for Fort Worth and Denver Railway at Stamford retiring in 1935. He later farmed near Brownwood and was a deacon at the First Baptist Church. Survivors include wife two sons Rev J A Box Iraan one Addian Box San Diego two daughters Willie Lee Box Brownwood Mrs Bennett Wichita Falls four grandchildren one great grandchild and two sisters.

The VFW Auxiliary will provide Christmas dinner boxes for needy families. Mrs. Lee Maxwell leads welfare efforts and invites referrals.
