Tech. Sgt. Frank W. Lowe Jr. has sent Christmas gifts from England where he has served since August 1942. His mother received a scarf and other items. Mrs. Lowe got wooden bookends from England. Lowe, a Stamford High School graduate, enlisted in 1941 after working at Bunkley Drugstore.
Pvt George D Swift son of Mr and Mrs W M Swift of Stamford arrives at Ashburn General Hospital near McKinney Texas from the European theater. He served with the armored infantry until wounded August 28 in Fountainbleau France and took part in the Seine crossing and the Chartres battle for which he earned the Bronze Star and Purple Heart.
Carl A. Corley of Stamford Texas received the Air Medal for his meritorious service from May 4 to July 28 1944 in the India Burma theater. As a pilot with a Liaison squadron in Burma he completed 150 missions totaling 250 flying hours evacuating wounded artillery spotting and recon over enemy lines. He employed a bold bombing method in the Imphal campaign and previously worked for Arledge Ice Co as a sub station manager. He has served five years in the Army with over six months in I Bland.
Sgt. Paul Driskill, veteran of 65 missions, arrived home December 2 after 104 months overseas with the Ninth Air Force in England and France. He holds the Air Medal with 12 Oak Leaf Clusters, two combat stars, and the Purple Heart. He carried a shrapnel piece from his twenty-fifth mission.
Friends from Georgia called on Lieut L A Mitchell and Mrs. Mitchell of Dublin after spending Thursday with Mrs. Ted Myers. They were en route to Arizona where Mitchell will be stationed. Myers is a prisoner of war of Germany and the two men were longtime Georgia acquaintances.
Lieutenant Charles Edward Brownfield Jr was commissioned a second lieutenant after completing the Officers Candidate course at Fort Benning Georgia. He is assigned as an instructor at Camp Wolters Mineral Wells. He and his parents visited Columbia Georgia for graduation and were met by daughter Herschel D Peel of Florida. He will report to Camp Wolters in 10 days.
Owen Macon son of Mr and Mrs Ebb Macon of this city has graduated at the ordnance school in Norman Oklahoma and was promoted to seaman first class He serves as an ordnance gun mechanic in the United States Navy and has been sent to the west coast.
Horace Brooks of Jean Texas and nephew of Mrs. O A Tunnell spent Monday night with relatives after returning from twenty months service in the force. He is home on a thirty five day leave.
Ensign Roland Rinn moves from Corpus Christi Naval Air Station to Dallas to begin duty with a new training squadron. He transfers as the Navy reshapes aviation training in the region with changes in staffing and base assignments.

Martin, in the Merchant Marines and stationed at Pass Christian Mississippi, spends a few days with his parents Mr and Mrs W L Martin. They plan to travel to Brownwood to see his sister Tessica Martin. He has been in a New Orleans hospital five months for treatment of a broken wrist from a baseball accident during training.
Pvt Margie McClung completed basic at Fort Oglethorpe Ga and was stationed at Love Field Dallas her mother reports arrival last Friday. Pvt Elouise Griggs also joined WACs with four weeks typing school planned after basic training.
C. B. Nichols has received an honorable discharge from the Army and has returned home to join his family. He served with the Second Air Force and was stationed in Lincoln Nebraska.
William Frederick Bean, an early area settler active in civic work and farming, died at the Stamford Sanitarium Thursday at 4 a.m. He moved to Jones County in 1883, helped manage ranch work, led the Stamford National Farm Loan Association from 1917 to 1943, and was a member of the Texas Cowboy Reunion Association. Surviving children include R. E. Bean, Raymond Bean, John Bean, Sgt. Morris Bean, Jessie Bean, and Mrs. Harrell McDuff, with three grandchildren. The funeral arrangements will be announced by Arrow Funeral Home.
Walter H. Peters of Jones county died unexpectedly at his Pampa home. A former oil and gas man, he managed the Pampa airport and weather bureau for two years. He was a longtime cowboy and Texas Cowboy Reunion member, with burial in Highland cemetery after services at Kinney Funeral chapel and St. John's Methodist Church.
Waste paper will be collected in the north part of the city on Saturday. Joe Rickard supervising the effort said residents should bundle paper and place it at the curb by 9 a.m. for pickup.
The Cub Scouts of Stamford meet at the scout building Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. They bring lunches and eat at noon. Dens will hold songs games and competitions. R. N. Eastus the scout field executive announced the event.
Judge Clarence O Kraft of Fort Worth and Tarrant County judge will speak at a joint Rotary Exchange meeting at noon December 15 and at a public evening meeting. Camp Fire Girls leaders push local organization with Blue Birds charter ceremony and candlelight entries. Pastors urged to announce and invite the public to attend.
Stamford lags at 34 percent of Series EF and 36 percent of overall quota by Wednesday noon with $369,550.25 in Series E bonds and $175,000 in total sales reported. Stamford area quotas are $375,700 for Series E and $469,000 overall. Anson at 41 percent of its $257,600 quota, Hamlin at 57 percent of $193,200.
The Cowboy Ball to The Cowboy's Christmas Ball will be staged in Pioneer Hall Anson on the evenings of December 20 22 and 23. Proceeds go to War Bonds as a decade of Anson re enactments of polka schottische and square dances closes. Guests urged to dress as 80s and 90s pioneers.
Despite cold drizzle, the G I Jamboree at the Grand Theatre drew a good crowd and secured 17650 in War Bonds. The event faced weather changes after plans to hold at the post office square and benefited from free use of the Grand by Mrs. Sanford Hodge. Har ley Sadler Sweetwater and Jimmie Allard Vernon starred, backed by the ASFTC band from Camp Barkeley, plus two soldiers and a World War II sailor. The tour was arranged through the special service office with Brig Gen Roy C. Hefelbower, ASFTC Camp Barkeley, coordinating support.
A November Tuesday night event at Stamford High School raised 450.75 in Series E bonds and stamps plus a $5,000 Series G bond as admission. The school’s Glee clubs performed under Miss Martha Cagle with Albert Russell and Noma Jean Trimmier assisting.
C. B. Smith post commander of Vernon D. Hart American Legion celebrated a birthday surprise at a Legion Auxiliary social Monday night. A birthday cake preceded by Happy Birthday, with coffee served after the cake, followed bridge forty-two dominoes and other games. The Anthony will hold a business meeting Monday at 8 p.m. in the Legion Hall led by president Mrs. Ryland Gleaton. Beginning with this meeting there will be two business meetings monthly on the second and fourth Mondays, with the social on the first Monday.
Mrs. Jack McClendon knitting chairman of Jones County Red Cross reports the yarn quota for 100 pairs of socks has been received. She appeals for volunteers to learn knitting to fill the quota promptly as few knitters are in the county. Tacoma means highest or near heaven.
Charles Markham, vice president of the First National Bank and civic figure, was fatally harmed? seriously injured Saturday night in a highway accident near Stamford. An overturned car was found near 3 am Sunday as a Kinney ambulance conveyed him to the hospital with a fractured skull, fractured neck, and lacerations.
The Pearl Harbor tag day by the American Legion Auxiliary on Saturday collected around 200 for child welfare, rehabilitation and related work planned for the year. Mrs. Ryland Gleaton, Auxiliary president, thanked the public for its cooperation in the effort.
Jones county 4 H members from Anson and Stamford earned prizes in a Sears Roebuck Poland China gilt show. First went to Max King of Stamford for a registered Jersey heifer. others included Billy Boyd Tarpley Merkel. Sam McLaren Anson. Ray Hansen Stamford. Prizes include chicks or turkey eggs. Plans call for doubling gilt distribution next year.
Telegrams sent to families report Frank J. Matecha Jr. killed in action in Germany on November 17. Parents Mr. and Mrs. F. J. Matecha of Hamlin Rt. 1 receive the notice. Also Pfe Dallas I. Davis reported wounded in action in Nancy France November 13. Dallas I. Davis is son of Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Davis of Lueders.
Only two days remain to provide gifts for the Yanks who Gave service members in hospitals at Christmas. The American Legion and Auxiliary urge donations at local stores by Saturday noon for December 10 shipment. Some gifts have been bought, wrapped, and labelled, with money jars set up in stores. A December 7 Roundup hall dance, sponsored by the Legion, will fund further Stamford gifts, with Camp Barkeley regional band playing.

Two supervisors from the California Creek Soil Conservation District will attend the fourth annual Texas Soil Conservation District supervisors meeting in College Station. J. F. McCulloch serves as chairman and John R. Watson as a member. They will report progress and developments from their district.
Aviation machinist mate third class Julian Elliott US Navy, survivor of the St Lo sinking, expects 30 day leave and Christmas with family in Stamford. He reported from Seattle November 29 and a letter confirms imminent arrival. Elliott, burned hands and all, is listed as OK. Brother Arno Ligon, pharmacist mate first class, also aboard and now in San Diego awaiting homecoming.
G E Goyne a longtime Jones county resident died of a heart attack while sitting in his car two miles northeast of Stamford as he and his wife prepared to drive to Abilene He was born December 30 1876 in Howard County Ark and moved to Texas with his family later living in Elgin He married Moss Lillian Davis in March 1902 and the couple moved to Jones county 27 years ago Survivors include his wife a son Otho L Gayne of Lubbock Army Air Field a daughter Mrs Fred Ownby of Abilene and a brother W B Goyne of Kilgore Funeral services were held Tuesday at 2 p m at Kinney Funeral Chapel with Rev H S Hinson officiating Burial followed at Funston Cemetery.
The Stamford Bulldogs wrapped up the season with a 16 to 0 non conference win over Stamford Winters on Thanksgiving Day. Cotton Harvey scored twice, Don Finley added both extra points, and a second quarter safety via a blocked kick produced the remaining points.
George G. Flournoy, chief of police, is honored by the Texas Police Association for the longest service in Texas with 44 years. He received a gold star pin set with a diamond on Wednesday.

Stamford High School football players were entertained at a Rotary Club luncheon. The program featured acting coach T R Tinsley, captain Bob Howse, co captain James Wells, and a roll call of squad members. The Rotary will meet with the Exchange Club Friday December 15 to hear Judge Clarence Kraft.
Seymour Panthers defeated Crowell to win the bi district title in Crowell last Thursday. The District 21 A team advances to meet Eastland Ballinger winner at Ballinger. Seymour scored on a second period pass George Sims to Golden and a fourth period run by Sims followed by Tirey Samsill plunge after Crowell fumbled at the one yard line.
