Red Cross drive totals 610.84 dollars with gifts from Stamford businessmen led by Rayford Hills. Contributions from individuals, schools, and wards are listed, and Christmas trees and baskets are planned for Mexican and Negro children. Two benefit shows at Palace Theatre December 10 and 17 will fund aid with admission by food or clothing donations.
Plans are underway for a district Harvest Day at St John s Methodist church in Stamford next Thursday December 10 announced by district secretary Mrs J B Dodson A strong delegation from the district is expected and several conference officers will participate The event centers on compiling the year s work and presenting full reports inviting women from local and other churches to attend.
B D Miles, longtime operator of a filling station and wrecking shop on the Anson Stamford highway, purchases the John Cook garage filling station and wrecking shop near Stamford and will close the former station. The report notes local reaction and mentions an unidentified informant.
R A Burton Jr 18 died at Stamford Sanitarium after oil can explosion started a kitchen fire at the family home ten miles southwest of Anson on Thanksgiving Eve. Brother Eual 16 was burned on the leg. mother burned in trying to help. Neighbors Robert Stuart and Doris Burton were uninjured. Both boys had graduated from Anson High School last spring.
Ben A Kenshale, 56, father of Mrs D L Ashley of Stamford, died at his Albany home after a heart attack. Funeral held Monday at 3 pm with Rev W M Nix presiding. Survived by widow six daughters and several relatives. Kenshale long noted as a pioneer grain thresherman and early gasoline tractor owner.
The High School football squad and Coach Lee Walker attended a Rotary Club luncheon. President J F McCulloch presided and Walker introduced each player, praising the champion Burkburnett team. Captain Lynn Doran pledged to give Burkburnett all they have Friday.
The Church of the Nazarene on North Swenson street announces a winter revival from Wednesday night December 9 to December 20. Everyone is invited to meet the new pastor and hear him preach. Young people are urged to join the newly organized N Y P S. regular Sunday services are 11 am, Sunday school 10 am, and night service 7 pm.
Pioneer boot maker and shoe repairman H. P. Fitzpatrick remains critically ill at his residence after five weeks of illness. Little hope is expressed for recovery.
Stamford business houses will close at 2 p m for the Stamford Burkburnett football game Friday afternoon after a chamber survey. Mrs Inez Bowdry secretary of the Chamber of Commerce announced the plan after canvassing stores and offices. Most stores will reopen after the game but many establishments will stay closed until Saturday morning.
Changes of residence on South Anson street follow recent home sales. J. F. Hogan moved to Cisco after selling his house. Tom Wiley purchased 302 South Anson and moved in. Adolph Johnson’s rock veneer home at 103 South Anson is now occupied by Bob Corley. W. H. Plant and wife redecorate and plan yard rock veneer at 215 South Anson after purchasing the home.
The Stamford Music Club will present a twilight Christmas concert at Central Presbyterian Church on Sunday December 13 at 6 o'clock. Mrs Byron Lewis president announced the event and invited the public to attend.
C J Sweeney district administrator of the Texas Relief commission at Abilene says a new enrollment of boys for CCC Camps will occur in January. Interested individuals should register at their County Relief or Welfare office with names and addresses to aid War Department reporting due November 30, with final applications by December 24.
The American will publish letters to Santa Claus starting next week. Letters should be written plainly on one side of the paper and addressed to Santa Claus care of The American in Stamford Texas. The letters will be printed in order received to cheer Santa.
Corsicana Postmaster A A Allison and Dallas Lone Star Gas vice president Stanley Kerr stayed last weekend with Mr and Mrs C T Thomas. Allison is a brother of Mrs Thomas.
Stamford hosts Burkburnett in a bi district football clash at Bulldow field 2 30 p m. Stamford arrives undefeated through eight games while Burkburnett has eight wins and one loss. Attendance chances are boosted by new bleachers and on field viewing areas as both teams seek district pride.
The Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company store in Stamford closed Saturday night and its stock was redistributed to other A. P. stores in the area. Manager J Ettheton left Monday with no assignment yet. The Larche building outlet had operated since April 1929 and officials gave no reason beyond presumed unprofitability.
Miss Joe Heathington of Sagerton daughter of Mr and Mrs W W Heathington earned honor grades in English Bible and Psychology on the mid semester report at Abilene Christian College.
Jane Smith daughter of Mr and Mrs Roy E Smith of Stamford appears on the mid semester honor roll. She earned honor grades in history and English reflecting strong academic performance.
The Stamford Bulldogs defeated the Haskell Indians 7 to 0 in District 9B action. Stamford's defense and key plays by Watson Jones and McGregor limited Haskell's offense while Stamford controlled yardage and pass gains.
Mr Kilpatrick of Oakwood a former Stamford resident was killed in an automobile accident while deer hunting near Uvalde. Howard Kilpatrick son and Mrs Kilpatrick with family left Friday after word arrived. Funeral held at Oakwood. Family to return to Stamford home soon after moving seven years ago.
Miss Clarice Buie and Mrs. Sal lie T. Pate escaped injury when two cars collided six miles from Roby on Sunday evening. The Buie car and a car driven by African American occupants sideswiped as the negro driver veered toward McCaulley. Minor injuries were reported for the other occupants. The women were returning to Stamford after taking Miss Pauline Buie to Roby after Thanksgiving.
Rev Adcock a McMurry College senior and student pastor will air a gospel series on Radio KRBC Abilene. The broadcasts run 8 to 8 15 each Sunday morning from Sagerton and O Brien Method list churches.
