30 Men Enlisted for TDG Stamford Unit
About 30 men have joined Stamford's Texas Defense Guard infantry unit with a 75 man quota expected by Monday. Major Alvis and Major Bevant visited the town last week to designate a provisional unit. Capt. Duble leads the group with officers Green and Duke. The unit is sponsored by the American Legion and local civic groups. enrollment includes plan for physical exams by Dr. Dallas Southard. Major Alvis will visit Tuesday for drill and induction instructions.

No Bus Tires for Football Use Says OPA

Cadet Withrow Eyes Return to Fight After Meuse Retreat
Eddy S. Withrow, an aviation cadet at Stamford Arledge field and son of A. G. Withrow, recalls his French Army service from 1930 to 1940. He fought at Liege Meuse and survived a 500 mile retreat to France, witnessing brutal bombardment, near miss of a percussion bomb, and only 32 of 150 in his company returning. He hopes to rejoin the U S Army Air Force to fight in Germany or elsewhere.

Stamford Ships Two Cars Rubber In Salvage Run
Two cars of scrap rubber were shipped from Stamford this week marking the first move since the June and July salvage campaign. One car was shipped by A. J. Bell and the other by Sinclair and Conoco wholesale oil agencies, both via the MKT. Several more car loads remain in stockpiles awaiting orders.

Mrs. J. S. Morrow Dies in Houston at 77
Mrs. J. S. Morrow 77 widow of a Stamford bank founder died in Houston last Friday. Funeral was held there Saturday. She and her husband helped organize the Morrow London bank in 1900, later Citizens' National Bank. Survived by son WOM Morrow of Abilene and daughter Ora Morrow of Houston. Ora taught in Stamford schools during the bank era.

First Bale of Cotton of 1942 Crop Ginned at Stamford
Stamford received its first bale of the 1942 season Tuesday afternoon ginned by the Farmers' Cooperative Gin. The bale weighed 505 pounds lint from 2200 pounds seed cotton grown by Fred Yaws on Judge B. P. Davenport’s farm southeast of Stamford. Buyer was Jesse Compton at 15 cents a pound. Chamber of Commerce paid a $54 premium. The season is not expected to start for about two weeks due to recent rains delaying maturities. Historical first bale dates are listed for 10 years, ranging from August to September.

Ban on Gasoline Shipments Won’t Cause Local Shortage
The Office of Petroleum Coordinator for War banned hauling automotive gasoline by rail in Texas Oklahoma Louisiana and 17 mid western states to free 5000 to 7000 tank cars for East Coast oil moves.
