Principal J W Simpson reports senior high registrations at 299 with an expected enrollment of 330 by school start on September 2. Registration schedules run August 31 for first and second grades, September 1 for third to sixth, and afternoon slots.
Stamford High School announces homecoming on October 23 with a two day event around the Anson Bulldogs football game. Committee members must submit lists by September 1 to Patsy Prewit Brad Rowland or Jack Griffin. An executive meeting is scheduled for 8 pm on September 1.
James Lester Smith a 29 year old Stamford resident who had moved to Snyder four months ago was fatally electrocuted when a gin pole on his truck touched a high voltage wire. He died at a Snyder hospital around 2 p.m. while working on the Galt Browning lease. He was born March 1 1930 in Kaufman and leaves two sons Tommy Lee and Mark both of Stamford, two brothers LeRoy Smith and others, two sisters Mrs Raymond Swartz Snyder and Pauline Smith Monahan. Funeral arrangements are pending at Kinney Funeral Home.
City officials announce the West McHarge pool will close after Sunday with final hours extended if crowds remain. Manager Harry Steenson notes attendance averaged about 40 swimmers, peaking near 100, and that the pool opened May 30 before winter maintenance and drain ahead of next summer.
Stamford High School band under director W. F. Maves begins practice Monday at 11 in the morning. Marching sessions follow each afternoon at 3 starting Monday.
City Clerk Kenneth Reber departed Tuesday for a two week vacation with Mrs Reber. He will visit his sister in Fort Worth and plans fishing trips at Lake Stamford.
Esteben Martinez rented the David Prewit farm near New Hope and brought in the season s first bale. The 415 pound bale was from an early tankard variety and marked the earliest ginning in three years with good rain timing. Martinez relies on 32 acres and forecasts 23 bales while noting last year s rains caused heavy damage.
Preliminary modernization plans for the city auditorium are completed and will be reviewed by the chamber planning committee led by Bill Swenson. Main changes include a nine foot mezzanine with two configurable conference rooms, four offices, storage, and potential rental for public agencies. The first floor will gain removable seating to host banquets for 500 or entertainment for 700, with air conditioning the major costly feature and a possible bond election to finance.
Denzie Thomas, about 20, of Stamford was arrested late last week on aggravated assault charges stemming from a July 3 knifing of Wayne Lawrence Seymour during a Stamford National Guard Armory dance. He waived preliminary hearing, was released on $1,000 bond, and a trial date has not been set. Sheriff Dave Reyes reported no confession was obtained.
Stamford and Paint Creek area farmers join a cotton insect control short course from August 31 to September 4 under Vocational Agriculture instructors Weldon Holbrooks and Brad Rowland of Stamford, and W L Medford of Paint Creek. H A Turney of Texas A&M, an insect control specialist with two degrees and four years field experience, will teach. The program includes field work for insect identification and spray calibration demonstrations. An entry fee of 2 will be charged with meetings at Stamford High School and potential sessions in Paint Creek. contact Holbrooks, Rowland, or Medford to participate.
Firemen responded to two grass fires Friday with no damage. The first call came at noon to 310 South Wetherbee near railroad tracks, and the second to the 600 block on East MeCharg later in the day.
County lawbreakers got a break this week as Sheriff Dave Reyes was out of service for several days due to illness.
Coach Wartes paints a gloomy yet hopeful picture for Stamford Bulldogs as they rebuild after losing 13 seniors. He notes travel hurdles and limited home games while highlighting a mix of big linemen and smaller quick backs. He cites Charley Helmer and Wendell Robinson as key players and mentions a season opener on September 4 in Stamford.
Rev Elmer Sprecher announced the Casa de Amigos location is secured at the former plumbing shop on North Swenson, near the square and State Theatre. A meeting to discuss needs and final arrangements is set for 9 am Thursday with owner Co A Kinney.
County fair promises family fun and premiums with livestock and crop entries. More than 200 livestock entries and numerous field crops, women’s exhibits, educational, and commercial displays are prepared. Midway rides, concessions, and parking on Avenue 1 will accommodate visitors.
Daniel Smith 47 of 809 East Reynolds died after a heart attack at work at Lone Star Gas. Rites were held at First Baptist Church with Rev. Jack Southerland. burial at Highland Memorial. He served in World War II and left a wife Florence and daughter Jane with several siblings.
The VFW post hosts a chicken supper for members and families at 4 pm Saturday at the post. Chere will be Thee Charge.
