Stamford Bulldogs host fall camp finale at Bulldog Stadium with a booster club ice cream party. 48 players from varsity junior varsity and B team will participate in staged scrimmages from 5 30 to 8 30 pm followed by free ice cream for all.
North Swenson between McHarg and Moran streets implements two hour parking from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Signs are up after the city council approved the ordinance amid a merchants petition. Cars must be moved for at least two hours before reparking. violations are a misdemeanor with a fine.
A public hearing on Stamford's new budget is set for Sept. 20 after council discussion. City Manager Kerry Sweatt proposed adding a garbage truck for twice weekly collections, plus plans for limb pickup, street sweeping, alley weed cutting, and a dedicated crew. He suggested financing through higher garbage collection costs amid lower water revenue, while ambulance operating costs remain undetermined.
Lueders-Avoca School will start Monday with the high school at Avoca and junior and elementary at Lueders. Grady Avants, superintendent, said four new teachers join the staff. Milton Martin will coach basketball and serve as high school principal. Dwaine Finley remains junior high coach and English teacher. Bill Walker teaches high school English. First six man football game is Sept. 13 at Hobbs. Budget hearing approved a 174000 dollar budget with a 1.25 tax rate.
Ed Paynter Democratic nominee for criminal district attorney spoke to the Rotary Club about the new office created by law. He outlined two or three assistants and a full time investigator with costs shared by Catahan Taylor and Jones counties in proportion to business handled.
Registration for Stamford High School begins with seniors in the morning and juniors in the afternoon followed by continued sessions for other grades. Buses will run a trial Aug 28 and Oliver and Reynolds registrations occur that day. A public budget hearing is set for Thursday at 8 PM with a tentative budget of 588000 dollars.
Paint Creek schools start Monday under Bill Gibbs in his first full year as superintendent. The faculty includes new teachers Marvin Ansley football coach Howard Brass homemaking instructor Parma Rohis Inez Lawrence Barbara Harrison Jane Pritchard along with Shirley Medford Olea Taylor Hattie Rae Haynes Wanda Morrison Tom Horton and T. E. Pritchard as principal. A faculty meeting was Aug 17 and registration is Friday. First football game is Sept 13 at Paint Creek against McCauley.
The Stamford city council approved requesting the Texas Highway Department to mark two school crossing points on North Swenson near Oliver Street School. Cross hatch markings and school slow signs would be added at Oliver and Swenson and Campbell and Swenson corners. A speed limit reduction during school hours was under consideration.
Bill Longley of Stamford was reelected president of the Jones County Heart Association at the unit’s annual meeting in Anson. Mrs. May Corley was elected secretary and co chairmen were named for the annual fund drive, which raised 1772.71, about 500 more than 1967. A 1969 goal of 2700 was set, with Longley to attend the Texas Heart Association assembly in San Antonio October 26 27 where Dr. Denton Cooley will be present. The group promotes films literature and exhibits to schools hospitals and the public.
The city council discussed acquiring a station wagon to serve as an ambulance. Police and fire departments would share operation with trained personnel. Hospital board participation has not been secured. Kinney Funeral Home will end ambulance service by August 29, creating urgency.
The Stamford Memorial Hospital School of Vocational Nursing held graduation exercises at St John’s Methodist Church on Friday August 16. Hospital administrator John B. Martin gave the address, with special music by Mrs N M Phy. Diplomas were presented by Mrs Bobby Connally to a class of graduates including Lorene Ardell Benson Dora McWhorter Jerene Darden Milla Deen Lowery Jo Ann Sparkman Linda Gayle Gholson Iona Horience Harwood Pamela Faye Lemon Rosa Silba Lucille Bidshaw Beatrice Plumlee and Jackietyle Augley.
Stamford city council approved contracts for street improvements and paving with Coltharp Construction Co. and Pioneer Construction Co. Sealed bids opened Friday covered three projects including an airport upgrade awaiting FAA approval funding. A bid error at Price Construction Co. prompted FAA review and possible withdrawal under a 90 day rule.
A counterfeit $20 bill was passed over the weekend at Western Auto Store. Owner Harold Wilka does not know who passed it. The bill was discovered at the bank Monday. Police Chief B Q Cooper said the Secret Service was notified and investigating. He noted other counterfeit bills appeared in Abilene and Sweetwater but could not confirm if the same bill was involved.
Mrs Elizabeth B Morgan and Ruth Evelyn Gray of Stamford are among 688 seniors applying for bachelor's degrees at North Texas State University. Summer commencement exercises are set for 9 p m August 23 at Fouts Field. Morgan is a candidate for a Bachelor of Arts in English. Gray is a candidate for a Bachelor of Business Administration.
