Summer ends as Stamford Public Schools prepare fall registrations starting Sept 3. All students register by week’s end with classes resuming after Labor Day. A faculty meeting Aug 31 introduces ten new teachers as schools schedule 8:25 a.m. start times and 3:45 p.m. dismissals.
Avoca Public Schools will open August 26 with a partial day. Classes start at 8 20 a m and end at 2 p m for that day only, with buses running morning and evening. From Tuesday, dismissal will be 3 40 p m. Superintendent James Conner announced the 1963 64 teaching roster.
Stam ford Lions Club hosts its annual barbecue Tuesday night at Lake Stam ford. The group meets at the Kyle-Jayton cabin at Veda's by 7:30. Bob Stone of Abilene, a 23 year veteran football official, outlines new 1963 Texas high school rules restricting interior linemen and expanding quarterback eligibility as a pass receiver during this Lions Club meeting.
Bill Jones has joined Stamford Public Schools to teach Spanish in both junior high and high school. A University of Oklahoma graduate, he previously taught at Haskell High School and Technical High School in El Paso. He attended the Foreign Language Institute at Oklahoma this summer for graduate work. He is the son of a former OU drama director, married with a baby daughter, and his wife Mrs Jones will teach commercial subjects in the Weinert system this year.
Fifty two boys reported for opening drills as Stamford Bull dogs prep for the season opener September 6 against Quanah Indians. Two more players than expected, two-a-day practices this week and next, with scrimmage sessions likely before school starts September 3.
Elizabeth Ann Johnson, Hamlin High School class of 1959, will teach physical education at Stamford High School this fall. She earned a BA in physical education and English last January and has worked in the Abilene Recreation Department since graduation. During college she played on the tennis team and belonged to the women's sports club. She attends the Methodist Church.
During the past week water meters were installed for several residents including Mrs. T. H. Holmes on 1311 Hudson Road, Nancy A. Quattlebaum on 1403 Hudson Road, Darrel Chase at 304 E. Vanderbilt, Bill McEachern at 1303 Compton, and Leon Hargrove at 1013 N. Webb. The notices list exact street addresses and names of installees.
New Texas laws go into effect Friday affecting pool halls speed limits and bad checks. Stamford faces decision on allowing pool halls with per table licenses and fees. A 70 mph speed limit is under review pending accident data. Bad check penalties include jail time and a $1 fine with notice rules for collectors. Also sweeping reforms across about 350 statutes including Sunday bowling legality.
Nancy A. Quattlebaum, a 1955 Stamford High School graduate, will teach a special education class for Stamford Public Schools this term. She has a BS from Tomurry College Abilene 1959, pursued a master’s in special education, and serves in church and local committees.
The Stamford Junior Chamber of Commerce plans a Kids Day for all children 12 and under next Wednesday August 28. Activities include free swimming or bowling, a free movie at The Grand Theatre, a picnic lunch, and an airplane drop of tickets for gifts.
Delegates to Blue Bennett State in Austin will present their reports for the American Legion Auxiliary on Tuesday night August 27 at 7 30 p m in the American Legion Hall. B P W members parents of the girls and other interested persons are invited to attend.
The City of Stamford pumped 48 738,500 gallons from Lake Stamford between July 20 and Aug 20, marking one of the lake’s highest monthly totals in ten years. Hamlin also drew over 39,000,000 gallons, about 9 million more than the same period in 1962. City manager Harry Steenson notes total pumped does not equal consumption as much water goes to backwash and other uses.
The Sth Annual Jones County Fair starts Friday in Anson with livestock judging a downtown parade queens contest talent show and horse show as major draws. Opening day parade at 2 30 p m past downtown. livestock judging begins early. Exhibits in Pioneer Hall include women teens juniors and field crop and commercial displays. Queen’s competition includes Future Farmer Chapters Home Demonstration clubs and 4-H members. Friday evening crowns the queen. Saturday features talent show and midway rides. Horse show begins Saturday at 9 a m with halter and performance judging. high point trophy awarded. Donald Rutledge of Abilene to judge. youth division offers barrel racing western pleasure and flag racing. Entries accepted until judging begins.
The Salvation Army of Stamford, active less than two years, aims to raise 3900 of the United Fund’s 11 000 goal to fund local relief. An eight member committee led by Herschel Kelley oversees aid for transients, with funds spent on food gasoline repairs and other needs. The unit sent three Hispanic youths to Camp Hoblitzelle and hosts ongoing mail solicitations amid past opposition from the local Ministerial Alliance.
