Stamford plans a welcome program led by Mrs. E R Pace to greet new residents. She will visit families, share information on churches schools and businesses, and deliver a city and chamber welcome letter. Merchants will host staff visits give small gifts and pay 50 cents per new prospect call.
Maize harvest is in full swing and yielding four to five times more than forecast after dry weather eased. Cecil Eager reports large shipments from Stamford by rail and truck with about 55 rail cars moved and similar truck totals. Cash price is around 1.50 per 100 pounds while government farm storage price is 2.02.
The Swenson school of Bricksdale will open Tuesday September 6 with Mrs L L Boyles of Aspermons as teacher for grades one through six. Upper grade students will attend Lueders this year and a station wagon will transport pupils to the Swenson or Lueders bus stop as needed.
Sue Humphrey, Texas Tech graduate, will teach public school music at Sam Norwood Consolidated School near Shamrock. She is the daughter of Mr and Mrs A C Humphrey of this city.
Mrs. R. O. Pearson of Abilene will head the adult education department of the Christian Church and speak at the morning service Sunday at Central Christian Church. The event highlights adult education efforts within the denomination.
Funeral service for Charles J. Turner age 62 who died Sunday at Stamford Sanitarium was held Monday at 3 p.m. at the Church of Christ with Lloyd Connel minister. Burial in Highland cemetery. Turner survived by his wife four daughters two sons two stepdaughters and 22 grandchildren and three brothers and three sisters. He was born September 13 1886 in Woodbury Tennessee and came to Texas as a young man.
Chamber of Commerce President Bill Morrow says a Paint Creek reservoir could supply Stamford and nearby towns for 40 or 50 years. Federal support from Sen. Lyndon B. Johnson and Rep. Omar Burleson backs the plan as Bureau of Reclamation surveys prepare a report for Congress.
The Bob Baskin association submitted an application Monday for rights to 310 000 acre feet of water to the Brazos River Authority at Mineral Wells. The submission follows a State Water Board procedure recommended by E V Spence. Attending were John Couch Courtnet Hunt Ralph Duncan and D A Bandeen, with Brazos district manager Collins and Mineral Wells director Fred Brown. The request will go to the Brazos Authority executive committee for review by directors.
The Panhandle Producing and Refining Company's Lueders refinery shut down at 11 a m Tuesday with plans for permanent abandonment. Crude oil purchases ended August 1 after six months of losses due to falling fuel oil prices. The plant will be left in standby condition. it operated since 1933 and was owned by Panhandle Refinery since 1925. J C Hester, an original owner, had managed it since 1933.
Texas lawmakers met in Washington led by Rep. Ed Gossett to press Dean Acheson for action on oil imports. They fault the State Department for unsympathetic treatment of domestic production and will seek an audience with the secretary. Also named were Rep. George Mahon and Rep. Omar Burleton.
Hart Masters Unit No. 100 of the American Legion reports 60 new members under leader Mrs. E. C. Jeanes first vice president elect for 1949 50. Dues run through August with plans for installation of new officers Thursday and a full list of standing committees. Past presidents including Mrs D Duncan and others support the drive. Mrs Rita Breaux state president elect attended the Fort Worth convention on August 4.
Dr Harry Lee Haynes, a dentist, opened his new office on Wee the Harg avenue after awaiting equipment and renovation completion. He and his wife recently moved to the area from Dallas. Also noted were local residents Mr and Mrs Frank Turne Miss Sarah Hudspeth and Mrs Jennie McDaniel shopping in Dallas and Fort Worth for B and H Shop merchandise.
Mr and Mrs L A Dewees return from an eight day trip which included a Bastrop Louisiana family reunion with about 500 attendees Their daughter Mrs Freddie Friday of Littlefield joined them They also visited Buck Westbrook and Buford Westbrook in Arkansas and Louisiana.
Rev. Sterling Price of University Baptist Church Abilene outlines postwar religious shifts. He cites modernists ultra fundamentalists community churches revival tent preaching and rising emphasis on the second coming while warning against centralized non denominational trends and forced unifications.
A revival meeting at the Methodist Church in Tuxedo features Rev. Charles Fike of St. John's Methodist Church for the opening. The revival runs August 19 through August 27 with nightly services at 8 o'clock. On Sunday Rev. Bourdon Smith of Tuxedo and McMurry College student preaches at St. John's while the Tuxedo pastor is away.
The Crawford household hosted all five of Sam and Mrs Crawford’s sons and their grandchildren over the weekend. On Friday visitors included Clyde Crawford with daughters Sherri and Jan from Jacksonville, Earl Crawford with children Carolyn John and Jeanette from Fort Worth, and Onis Crawford with sons Jimmy and Robert from Hamlin. James of Mount Pleasant and Ralph of Fort Worth joined on Sunday. the Earl family had already returned to Fort Worth by then.
Mrs. N J Guillet and her daughter move to Wichita Falls to join Mr. Guillet, who teaches at Hardin College. Mrs. Guillet resigns as speech teacher and will teach at a Wichita Falls junior high. Mary Alice remains at North Texas State College, Martha plans Hardin College, Carolyn enters high school, and Gwendolyn will attend elementary school.
Mr and Mrs Kimbell Cook relocate from Odessa to Wichita Falls where Mrs Cook gains transfer with Phillips Petroleum Co and Mr Cook plans to attend Hardin College this fall. They visited here last weekend with Mrs Fuqua and Mrs Keese has returned to Jefferson after a stay with her sons and daughters in law.
A gospel meeting at the Stamford Church of Christ runs August 26 through September 4. Evangelist Claude Guild will lead the revival with Smith Kite serving as song director. Daily services are at 8.15 p m. Everyone is invited.
Community Chest chair John Willoughby announced a city wide fundraising push aligning with the national drive. The plan gathers major Stamford organizations including Cancer Foundation Infantile Paralysis Foundation Red Cross to set a budget, with a special committee listing all potential donors for the benevolence and civic work of Stamford.
Rail offices in the Wichita Valley and Missouri Kansas Texas area will close Saturdays and Sundays starting September 1 as a 40 hour week for non operating workers takes effect. Passenger service changes are minimal with ticketing and baggage checks shifting toward weekdays for weekend trips. Beginning September 3 freight stations close to forwarders on weekends and holidays with amended demurrage and storage rules.
The Board of directors of the Business and Professional Women’s Club met at the home of new president Frances Bennett Monday night to plan the coming year’s program and yearbook. The first fall meeting is set for Thursday night September 1 at Chuck Wagon dining room. Guests included Catherine Lavelle, Margaret Crockett, Willie Sansom, Loraine Bennett, Myrtle Locke, Mmes Warren High, James High, Joseph High, C L MeIntorff, Fannie Meeker, Sue Quade, and others. members present listed.
Jones county finances are sound and healthy says auditor Burkett in a statement to the commissioners court. He notes anticipated revenue should meet operating and bonded needs without increasing values or rates as the 1950 budget is adopted. The tax rates set include general funds and road district levies totaling 0.64 on the dollar.
Mr and Mrs N M Phy return from Holden Missouri where they visited Mrs Phy’s brother Reid Wilson and his wife and two daughters. They traveled back via the Ozarks.
Fourteen juniors and two seniors earned Red Cross Lifesaving certificates from classes led by Mrs. J. M. Bennett and Mrs. Charles Tayman. Seniors range 16 and older. juniors 12 to 15. Some parents contributed $1 to supplement instructor pay as classes extend to Friday August 26. Passers include seniors Marc Johnson and Ann Thomas. new junior lifeguards are Winton Thomas Aidon Moritz Paul Phy Glen Lewis Nancy Wilson Sandra Rudin Lucy Kennedy Joy Sosebee Matilda Judy Metty Betty Johnson Richard Bennett James Thompson Wayne Crawford.
The Exchange Club's Sunshine Special will run Thursday August 25 for Stamford first through fifth graders. About 40 club members will accompany the children from the post office plaza at 1 p.m. to the Lueders Baptist Encampment grounds with a first aid stand on site.
Mr and Mrs Eugene Meder and daughter Jo Ann from St Louis visited Mrs B W Cullum and family in Kingsville and joined longtime Stamford friends Ira and family at the Samuels home. The two families had shared a house in Abilene during the war and this is Jo Ann's first meeting with the Samuels. The Meders returned to St Louis after the war and contact was lost until a phone call led to the reunion in Stamford.
The Jones County Northside Singing Convention will meet at Calvary Baptist Church Hamlin on Sunday August 21 for an all day event. Lunch will be served at noon and singing starts at 1 30 p m. Several quartets and many out of county singers are expected to attend.
Mrs F W Lowe and her daughter Mrs Guy Brown attended a Newberry family reunion Sunday. A large group of relatives and a few friends gathered for the occasion.
