Early maize is being gathered and sold on the Stamford market this week though buyers say the feed is too green to ship. Harvest should be well under way by late next week with yield about a ton per acre head and maize prices at 95 cents to 1 per 100 pounds. Clark Bros. Feed Store and Stamford Mill and Elevator Co. are buying the feed.

Three delegates from the Central Presbyterian Church Young People's Society Jean Furrh Lois Nail and Billie Marie Russell and pastor Rev Bruce Tucker travel to the Buffalo Gap conference. Rev Tucker to serve on the faculty under dean Rev Alfred M Dorsett Canyon. A second Intermediate group will depart August 17 for a four day conference at Buffalo Gap with Dan Bunkley Jerry Bushell Lavon Attaway Stanley Reese Patty McDonald and Louise Pinnell. Rev Tucker will also attend the Boys Cowboy Camp meeting at Ft Davis August 18-25 as director of young people's work.
Stamford High will begin a pre flight aeronautics course for juniors and seniors this fall. Principal T R Tinsley, now qualified to teach, studied at Stamford Flying school and Texas Wesleyan College. The program stresses physics and mathematics as essential training and offers a full unit of credit toward graduation. Both boys and girls may enroll.
Two women from Lueders, Mrs. Boyd Nanny and her sister-in-law Lola Nanny, died August 5 in an irrigation canal near Buckeye Arizona during a rescue attempt. Mrs. Nanny, born August 17 1913 in Johns ville, was a Church of Christ member since age 14. Surviving are her husband two sons a daughter three sisters and six brothers. Funeral services were held August 12 at the Church of Christ in Johnsville with relatives from Charley Cox Red Cox and Ivan Spinks in attendance.
Friday is the final date to register rent houses apartments and rooms with the Area office by August 15 Roy G Thomas of Abilene will be at the Stamford Chamber of Commerce office Friday afternoon to assist in the final phase and to open registration of hotels rooming houses tourist camps and similar establishments Registration of the latter group runs through August 31 Penalty for non registration may be a 5000 fine or one year imprisonment or both.
Mrs R L Harrison traveled to Lubbock with her parents and siblings for the graduation of Alfo L Baker of Abilene from Lubbock Flying School He received a second lieutenant commission and silver wings and was assigned to a California instructor school in the near term The party included Vera Baker of Houston and A G Baker of Fort Worth plus Mr and Mrs G Baker of Abilene
Stamford salvage committee leaders R C Ricks and Cleburne Huston set a Friday 8 30 pm meeting at the Chamber of Commerce to outline county wide junk rally details. They call defense clubs to send reps as the war salvage drive expands with nationwide ads urging civilian scrap collection and reaffirm that all iron and steel scrap is needed.
Jones county women are invited to open meetings to learn their best suited war work. Mrs L M York will explain Red Cross volunteer services including production sewing knitting surgical dressing and canteen and motor corps. Mrs Dwight Davis urges moral duty to serve, outlining organized, trained roles for wartime and postwar reconstruction.
Mr and Mrs J W Rye announce both sons in the armed forces. Cpl Donald Linville, Mrs Rye's son, joined three months ago and trained at Camp Bowie and Ft Dix before serving in England for two weeks. Tech Sgt Warren Rye, Mr Rye's son, has two years in the army and is now in Louisiana on maneuvers en route to Ft Bliss. James Rye, another son, is likely to report for duty soon.
A Jones county canteen corps will organize on August 17 with a first session at the home economies cottage at 9 am. Women who completed Red Cross nutrition classes from Stamford and Anson are eligible. Mrs Pailey Post chairs the effort. Mrs H K Langford teaches, with a 20 hour program offering three weekly two hour sessions.
Stamford's third Red Cross nutrition course runs August 17 at 8 p m in the high school home economics cottage. Instructor Mrs H K Langford leads discussions on balanced meals, cutting family food costs, corrective and reducing diets, and other homemaker topics. Enrollment contacts include Mrs R F Mahood and Mrs Cleburne Huston.
County AAA reports 63 wheat insurance claims approved totaling 10 560 bushels. J W Griffith chairman says applications for the new three year all risk crop policy are being taken at the county office while loss adjustments on the 1942 crop proceed.
Jones county enlisted four men for the United States Navy during the first week of an intensive recruiting campaign in the Dallas district during August and September. The quota for Jones County for August is set at two enlistments and remains for September. U S Navy Recruiting Station at Abilene, with C L Wylie in charge, announced the drive aims to reach 6,000 recruits in North Texas, enabling crews for more than 30 destroyers. American Legion committees backing the Navy include Cleburne Huston, C B Smith, Roscoe Hood for publicity, W G Swenson, H G Andrews, L W Johnson for advertising, and Rey Duke, Dr A Blackwell, C F Upshaw for finance.
A mission program will be held at the First Baptist Church Monday afternoon at 3 30 o clock. A freewill offering will be taken to aid an aged minister of the county.
The 22 year old Second Lieutenant Norris M. Russell, assigned to Savannah for three months of A-20 bomber study, received his Air Corps commission and silver wings at Kelly Field. His family attended his graduation in San Antonio as sister Billie Marie Russell joined relatives. His older brother Aviation Cadet Earl Russell is due to graduate from Kelly Field on September 6.
The Jones County Home Demonstration Council met at the Woman's Club House in Anson with Mrs. Will Myatt in charge. Guest speaker Miss Myrtle Murray of A and M College spoke as marketing specialist. Plans were made to present the Gold Star pin to the outstanding 4 H girl of 1941 and to select the 1942 Gold Star girl. Delegates Mrs. Will Myatt and Mrs. C. D. Bingham will attend the State Texas Home Demonstration Association meeting in Ft Worth on the 17th to 20th. A tea followed in honor of the home demonstration agent who had recently married.
The Stamford public schools will open on September seven with registrations in the first two days and regular schedules starting the third day. Four teachers reelected last spring resigned over the summer including Leonora Walker Adelene Hodges Mary Nell Holt and Ann McReynolds. Miss Holt wed after school ended and Miss Walker plans to teach in Wichita Falls this fall. Flo Maddox of Gordon was elected as a new teacher but not yet assigned.
Oscar A Rial age 21 of Stamford enlisted in the United States Navy at the Abilene Navy Recruiting Station on August 10.
Public schools in Stamford and nearby areas may provide every child with a half pint of milk daily, free or for one cent. The program, run by the Agricultural Marketing Administration, will cover the milk cost while schools handle refrigeration, delivery, and accounting.
Cotton prospects in Jones county look strong with potential bales per acre depending on rain. Homer D Wade 68 longtime Stamford figure died Sunday afternoon at his Smithville home after a short illness. He came to Stamford in 1908 as secretary of the Stamford Commercial club helped form a unified highway system and later held key posts with West Texas Chamber of Commerce and Dallas Chamber. He helped locate Camp Swift in Bastrop county and retired to Smithville two years ago. He is survived by his widow and brother Henry B Wade of San Diego.
J. F. McCulloch presented a view to the Rotary Club that Russia is far from defeat in the war. He cited remaining defense lines and vast resources, and argued Britain and America supplying weapons and equipment are crucial factors for Russia to lose the conflict. The club held a Tuesday night meeting with President R. C. Ricks, discussed finances, and planned to recruit new members. Four honorary members were re elected: Lieut. Col. E. V. Hardwick Major Frank M. Locke 1st Lt. Tom Bunkley and R. L. Penick.
The revival at First Baptist Church opened August 2 and runs through Sunday with no Saturday services. Special air conditioning units and enhanced cooling are used for the gatherings. Rev. Miles B. Hays preaches, and T. R. Harrison directs the music.
Stamford attendees included C A Douthit and Lester Baize of C A Douthit gin Jess Compton and Bentley Baize of Farmers Cooperative Tom Smith of J S Smith and Sons gin C M Francis of Rule Jayton Cotton Oil Co and Ray Morgan of Cook and Co cotton buyers attended the ginners convention held in Abilene Thursday of last week.
