Two Grass Fires Open Expected Wave of Blazes
The grass fire season appears to have started with two small fires reported by city firefighters last Thursday. Firemen warned residents to be careful burning trash or grass as August dryness often brings more blazes. The incidents occurred on East McHarg at 6:05 p.m. and 601 North Haskell at 10:15 a.m. with no damage reported.

First Baptist Names Harris as Minister of Music and Education
Pascal P. Harris will begin duties as minister of music and education at First Baptist Church Stamford on August 1. He arrives from East Fourth Street Baptist in Big Spring where he held a similar post for two years. Harris, a Dallas native, earned a BA in music from Baylor in 1950 and an MRE from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1954. He is married with three children and the family lives at 5 North Swenson.

Merchants Set December 5 as Christmas Opening Day
Stamford merchants will donate seven tenths of a cent per front foot to fund the downtown Christmas decorating program. The Retail Trade Committee of the chamber of commerce set December 5 as the official opening day with Santa Claus visiting and candy for children. Lake Map Prospect's new edition showing Lake Stamford routes sold quickly with about 150 copies requested in early days. Chamber Manager Lee Walker reported as many as 20 people per day visited the office to obtain copies, with some remaining available on a first come first served basis.

School Tax Rate Hiked Ten Cents

Rabied Calf Found on Farm Near Stamford
A yearling steer near Stamford was diagnosed rabid and destroyed. Dr. David Ballard said the animal belonged to a farmer south of Stamford and its head was sent to Austin for testing. He urged vaccination of pets and destruction of stray animals to prevent spread.

Fire City Employes Possess State Water Plant Licenses
R H Dickenson city street superintendent received renewal of his grade BE certificate of competency for water plant operation. Water Superintendent Jim Ulke said four other city employees hold similar certificates required by state laws. Certificates are awarded after exams in water quality, pumps, sanitation, bacteriological analysis, pipe laying and maintenance. Class A renewals are perpetual. class B and C renew on staggered cycles. Others named include Ulke, E Ss Weeks, Jesse Hodgkinson, and Harry Steenson. Dickenson has served since about 1938.
