Area wide polio inoculation campaign uses Sabin oral vaccine staged in Stamford and surrounding towns. Meetings outline schedule with first shot Sept 16 and follow ups Oct 28 and Dec 9, with Ed Suddath directing supply and distribution and Dr George Pryor heading the organizing group.
Stamford officials rejected A C Humphrey's bid to pay delinquent taxes on the former H O Wooten wholesale building dating to 1959. The council said only the board of equalization can alter valuations. The land and warehouse, valued with city methods, face penalties if unpaid while the school district pursues suit.
Maize harvest in the Stamford area is in full swing with good weather likely to finish soon. Acreage is down from prior years and yields are lower than last year, with estimates from 1,500 to 3,000 pounds per field and loan terms at $1.75 per 100 pounds if qualifying. Cash price is $1.60 per 100 pounds.
Clarence W. Laughlin of Stamford has been promoted to sergeant first class at Fort Sam Houston Texas. He joined the Army in 1943 and serves with the U S Army Garrison 4006th Dispensary. He is a Sagerton High School graduate and his wife May resides in San Antonio Texas.
Plans are being completed to name ASCS group committeemen in four communities A B C and D for a mail ballots election. Nomination by petition or by current committee is allowed with deadlines in August 1926. Ballots mailed ten days before September 11. Top five per community become delegates and officers leading to October 1 1962 term.
Funeral service for Miss Sarah Frances Hudspeth, 79, was held at 2 p m Sunday in Central Presbyterian Church Stamford. Rev. Jerry Boles and Rev. Jack Southerland officiated with music by Scotty Pryor. She died Friday at 5 10 p m and had lived in Stamford 26 years and owned the B H Dress Shop before retirement. Burial followed in Rule Cemetery under Pinkard Funeral Home Rule. Survivors include a niece Evelyn Smith and seven nephews Neal Hudspeth Hilton Hudspeth Joe Hudspeth L B Hudspeth M N Guest and a brother-in-law W F Turner and a sister-in-law Mrs Joe Hudspeth Sr plus seven grandnieces and nephews and three great-grand nieces and nephews.
The Stamford Exchange Club team lost the district tournament opener at Baird 10 to 5 to Sweetwater, who later won the tournament. In consolation play the Exchangeites were defeated 20 to 1 by Ranger.
A Monday night program explains Social Security for Spanish speakers in Jones County and nearby areas. Mrs. Fay Ford outlines coverage for domestic and agricultural workers and self employment with attendance notices encouraged but not required.
Gray and Schubert Grocery and Market will have its formal opening this weekend at 222 Hamilton Street. New shelving and stock of merchandise arrive with home killed meat and special prices to attract customers. Owners are Jimmy Jack Grey and Jerry Schuchert.
Stam ford High School vocational agriculture teacher Weldon Holbrooks travels to San Antonio for this week’s state meeting of VA teachers.
City Council clarified an option for three Stamford and one Fort Worth man to use the north hangar at the airport for a debent ing plant. They will pay $150 monthly for a second five years with price subject to negotiation. The hangar needs repairs and a new building will house equipment and revert to the city at lease end. Frank Morrow and C. C. Westfall are partners in the firm.
T W McFadden 80 of 915 bk Hamilton Street Stamford died in a San Angelo hospital. Funeral held at Kinney Chapel with Rev. James Smith officiating. Burial at Highland Cemetery. Born Aug 31 1881 in Troy Missouri he married Mabel Graham in 1911. Survivors include wife a daughter and a brother.
Mr and Mrs J O Calhoun and son Bobby have returned from a midweek vacation trip to the east coast. Accompanying them were Mr and Mrs W R Scott of Amarillo. The group visited Ronnie Calhoun and son Brian in Chester Pennsylvania and toured the New York City area before coming home.
Stamford invites bids to pave about 25 city blocks as part of a semi voluntary program. Bids will be opened at Friday's council meeting. Property owners must agree to costs beyond city funding with bonds approved. Streets listed include Davenport Anson McKinley Yale Symonds Williams and others.
City considers building a roadside park along Highway 380 east of Stamford at the old pump station as negotiations for widening the Stamford to Lueders route continue. The project affects an earthen reservoir and water supply history, with damages discussed between city and state officials. City council members expressed willingness to allow the park.
Luther Mosier 56 died Monday night after four days in Stamford Memorial Hospital. He lived at 406 S McKinley and worked at Sorrells Service Station. Burial followed at Albany cemetery with Kinney Funeral Home in charge. service at Calvary Baptist Church with ministers Sublett and Dale King. Survived by widow Mary West, a son Clark, two daughters Betty Lomax and Anne Belle Mosier, three brothers, two sisters, and other relatives.
Mr and Mrs Jack May owners of White Auto Store in Stamford will travel from Stamford to Houston for a free vacation prize in a sales contest. They will attend a major league baseball game in Houston then cruise Galveston for three days, then cruise on a luxury yacht to New Orleans after Galveston. Their Stamford store won first place among over 100 stores for selling 600 batteries.

Avoca school will open September 4 with registration on that day per superintendent James Connell. Two new teachers join the faculty including Charles Stenholm as vocational agriculture teacher succeeding Gerald Proctor, and Robert Taylor as assistant coach and science teacher. Bus drivers include Taylor J. D. Hargrove and Connell. lunchroom supervisor remains Mrs. J. Hobasterling. Expected enrollment similar to last year.
The Stamford water department earned an Award of Merit from the Southwest Section American Water Works Association for its safe record over the past year. The certificate hangs in the street and water department office, with congratulatory notes from L A Jackson, secretary treasurer.
A rattlesnake with 12 rattles was killed on McLendon Street east of the Wichita Valley tracks in Stamford. Mrs Edie Watson and her son in law Mr Adrian Lott and family were driving Mrs Watson to work when they spotted the snake. A neighbor brought a hoe and Mrs Watson used it to kill the rattler after a missed throw.
City council approved a mercury vapor street light to be placed in the alley behind First Baptist Church. Rev. Jack Southerland urged the light to illuminate the church parking lot and alley and deter prowling. The church will cover the $3.75 monthly bill, higher than regular lights at $1.25.
Cattle testing for the brucellosis eradication program starts Monday in Jones County. County agent Kirby Clafton says four inspectors from the State Animal Health Commission will cover the precincts. A community workers meeting Friday will finalize plans and line up cattle for inspection. A portable laboratory will be set up in Anson city park to process tests.

A building permit has been issued to C. C. Toney to construct a 10 by 10 foot addition to his residence at 705 South Swenson.
The Stamford city council on Friday approved First National Bank of Stamford as the city funds depository. The bond amount posted was $200,000 to secure the account.
Stamford Rotarians heard talks on auto sales and watchmaking with focus on watches. Davenport described the auto trade as free enterprise and cited 60 local families, 50k to 60k annual payroll, plus benefits to Stamford. Self noted May Jewelers purchase and traced watch history from portable timepieces to automatic and electric models.
Breckenridge oilman and Republican governor candidate Jack Cox will be the honor guest at a Stamford barbecue Tuesday night. J F West and G C Carothers lead the event with a pre-reception and a brief speech from Cox. Tickets cost $1.25 and deadline is Monday night.
