Barbara Sublett Crowned Miss Stamford at Jaycee Pageant

Barbara Sublett 19 of Avoca was crowned Miss Stamford at the 2nd annual Jaycee Beauty pageant held at the Grand Theatre. A 1949 Avoca High graduate, she will be a senior at McMurry College in Abilene this fall and will compete in the state contest.

Revival to Open Sunday at Calvary Baptist

A revival begins Sunday at Calvary Baptist Church led by Rev. J. E. McManus with Dan Gaines of Abilene to preach next week. Services at 10 30 a m and 7 30 p m run through Sunday August 12.

Elizabeth T. Lee 80 Funeral Held in Haskell County

Elizabeth Alfred Lee died Wednesday at 7 10 a m in a Wichita Falls hospital. Funeral services were held Friday July 27 at Kinney Funeral Chapel with Rev Charles E Fike officiating. Burial followed at Willow Cemetery Haskell County. Survived by three sons and one grandchild. T C Rice dismissed from hospital after 17 days for a broken arm.

Top Texas softball teams to meet in two day tournament here

About sixteen teams from Houston Austin Tyler Abilene Plainview and Gorman will play a two day junior softball tournament in Stamford starting Friday at 8 am on three fields with night games at Wendeborn Field. Finals and trophy presentations occur Saturday at 6 30 pm with admission charged for night games.

Frederick visitors share weekend at Gambills

Mr and Mrs Forrest Gambill hosted Mrs Forrest Gambill in Frederick Oklahoma with Sheryl Wayne and Clinton visiting from Frederick. Mrs Gambill had been in Big Spring visiting Rev and Mrs Dick O’Brien and Mrs Marie Haynes. She brought Johnny and Carl Philip Haynes to Frederick and plans to take them to meet her family.

$1,500,000 Bond Issue Sold Friday

The city sold a 1.5 million dollar bond issue to fund Paint Creek dam and a 15 mile pipeline to Stamford. Bids for the dam and pipeline open August 31, with preliminary work likely September 15. The project also includes a 60,000 acre foot lake, a new filtration plant, and water sales to West Texas Utilities Co. over 30 years.

Fate of New Hope School District in Election

Voters in New Hope and Stamford districts will decide on consolidating their districts in an election likely August 25. Petitions to County Judge Roger Garrett this week seek consolidation, following earlier annexation of six New Hope sections to Avoca.

Ten Day Revival Opens Sunday At Swenson Baptist

Dr Ike Hudson of the Stamford Chamber of Commerce health and safety committee says dead dogs and cats will be removed from streets if residents call 242J. A call to W S Cardell at that number provides location and service, which has long been available but is not widely known.

A revival meeting started Wednesday night at the Assembly of God Church led by Rev. Zear Amburn with Rev. John Nothall of Dallas as evangelist. Services occur each evening at 8 o'clock and will continue for two weeks or longer, with the public invited.

Stamford Girls Softball Team Aims for State Tournament

Stamford's girls softball team advances to the state girls tournament set for August 7 at Fralinger. The Junior Chamber of Commerce sponsored squad carries a 9 1 record with two all state players Lois Knipling pitcher and Opal Dunnam utility. Members should contact Louis Timberlake this week.

Birth Announcement for Ronda Jean Johnson at Stamford Sanitarium

A daughter,Ronda Jean Johnson, was born to Mr. and Mrs Adron Johnson at Stamford Sanitarium on July 31 at 7:55. She weighed eight pounds ten and a half ounces. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs W P Barlow of Abilene and Mrs J J Johnson of Stamford.

Water restrictions eased in Stamford as reserve rises

Water Superintendent T F Sosebee announced Stamford residents may resume watering on permitted days based on house numbers. Even numbered homes may water Monday Wednesday Friday, odd numbers Tuesday Thursday Saturday, with no watering Sunday. The standpipe reserve has rebuilt but can deplete quickly if users overwater. The hot days keep demand high and pumping limits tight.

Dates Set for Local Community Chest Drive in Stamford

Stamford will host a Community Chest drive this year with dates to be announced. At a Monday meeting, Lee Walker of the Chamber of Commerce presided. Co chairs Cecil Eager and Billy Bryant. A committee led by Warren Tayman Harmon Daffern and Dr. David Ballard will select drive heads. A budgeting panel includes Mrs. Garland Zimmerman, Mrs. Lou Polnace, Bill Longley and Ted Myers. Participating groups include United Charities, Boy Scouts, Camp Fire Girls, City Youth program, Youth Center, Summer recreation, Canfer fund, Heart fund and Palio fined. Earlier discussions paused due to lack of quorum.

Wilmington Visitors Stay With Local Family En Route to Okinawa

Turpins Plan Month Long Vacation Trip

Rev. and Mrs. M C Turpin announce a month long vacation starting Thursday. They will spend two weeks in Colorado then travel to Marshall to visit Mrs. Turpin's mother Mrs. R W Boyett. A week will be spent in Allen and Frisco where Rev Turpin once served as pastor.
