Stamford High School Seniors Honored at Friday Banquet

The Stamford High School junior class will host a Friday evening banquet at the Central Christian Church basement to honor the senior class. Festivities reflect a Texas theme with a miniature Alamo centerpiece and flags, as high school leaders including Wanda White and Harry Lee Haynes will participate. A sextet will sing Beautiful Texas while talks focus on Red for Valor White for Purity and Blue for Truth.

Stamford Bull in High Society Heads to New York Fair

The Hereford bull Stam­ford Bull nicknamed Scandalous John travels with rider Texas Jack Hill from Old Glory to the World’s Fair in New York. In Washington D C the bull and team are greeted by Senator Tom Connally and Rep Ma hon with Miss Ellen Edgeman of Weatherford crowned Miss Texas. Elmer Westbrook joins the party as singer and John R Martin of Stamford matrices the trip while the bull gains weight and wears out seven steel shoes on the journey.

Mrs Burbank to conduct free cooking school in Stamford

Mrs Gertrude Burbank, expert home economist, will lead The American cooking school in Stamford at the Ritz Theater May 4 and 6 with sessions 2 to 4 p m on Thursday and Friday and 9 15 to 11 a m Saturday. The event, free to attendees, is presented by The American with local merchants and national food firms, aims to improve kitchen efficiency and stretch the family food budget.

Methodists Gather for District Meet at Aspermont

The Methodist District Conference convened in Aspermont starting at 2:30 p.m. with Rev. E. B. Bowen presiding and Rev. H. L. Thurston as host pastor. Delegates from St. John's Methodist Church were named and local officers slated to attend. a barbecue lunch and multiple committee reports followed.

Stamford Junior Chamber to Screen Local Film at Grand Theater

The hometown movie sponsored by the Junior Chamber of Commerce will be shown at the Grand Theater on May 2. Ruth A. Ritchie, business manager, arrived to arrange. A cameraman arrives Saturday for five days of shooting including street and church scenes and civic group participation. The Amateur Service Production of Waco will handle filming.

Stamford Boy Wins District Tennis Honors

Stamford High School student Charles Brownfield dominated the District Five singles championship in Central West Texas. He won the final 6-0 6-4 after earlier victories over Ross Stewart and Shad Ragsdale, earning a regional berth in Abilene.

Boy Struck by Light Truck In Alley Run

Lee McCulloch 11, son of Georgia McCulloch of this city, fractured neck vertebra when knocked down and dragged by a light pickup last Sunday evening. Driver blinded by sun stopped after cries from mother and witnesses. He is to wear a cast after hospital treatment following X rays. Lee attends 6A at the Intermediate School and is in the junior boys class at St. John’s Methodist Church.

Singing Convention To Meet at Avoca

The Jones County North Sick Convention will meet Sunday at the Avoca High School auditorium. Special singers expected include the Stamford male quartet the Weinert male quartet the Sunshine quartet of Haskell county the Pope trio of Anson the Friendly Four of Sin and many others. All singers and song lovers are invited.

PTA Donates Funds to Two Civic Causes

The Parent Teachers Association approved donations totaling 55 dollars in the final meeting at the high school auditorium. A 15 dollar gift aided a Red Cross effort for county health nursing and a 40 dollar pool helped furnish the Home Economics cottage with Stamford Music Club and Exchange Club funds.

Dave Bennett Named City Court Judge by Council

David Bennett accepted the post of judge of the city court Tuesday. He was appointed by the city council at the regular meeting on April 7. City Manager RB Bowdry had been filling the post in recent years.

Stamford area oil operations surge as 24 wells enter drilling with six wildcat tests and 18 in side and outpost locations. Brownfield daughter of Mr and Mrs C E Brownfield is installed as president of the Fine Arts Club and junior federated music club for 1079 40. She succeeds Ann Bunkley who served the past year. Jean is a popular student at Stamford High School and in the freshman class.

Swan Olinger Home Destroyed by Fire East of Stamford

The Swan Olinger residence on the highway east of Stamford was a total loss after a 1:20 am fire. The family was away. origin undetermined. Firemen kept the adjacent filling station safe with a booster truck. Minor damage occurred at the McGary home on 60 North Wetherbee Street from an electrical short.

Four firms will occupy the Dasseert building at the corner of Moller avenue and Ferguson Street by May 1. Mrs. J. Rutherford Stamford district secretary of the Woman's Missionary Society returned home from Pampa where she attended the annual meeting of the Woman's Missionary Societies of the Northwest Texas conference held April 12 through April 1. Mrs. Grady Haye acted as a delegate with others from Avoca Lagerton and Haskell accompanying to Pampa and Amarillo before returning home.
