Serum from venom of deadly lance head viper first since 19th century
New York reports the Bronx Zoo performed a historic extract of venom from a Brazilian lance head viper under E W Runyan. The venom, weighing under a third of a teaspoon, will stockpile serum for decades to treat malignant diseases and serious infections, with future operations likely. The procedure, led by Dr Raymond L Ditmars and Dr St Clair Smith, ended with the serpent kept captive and at risk of starvation if it does not eat soon.
