Miss Anna J. Simms married Mr. Richard Kelly yesterday at 4 pm in the local Catholic church with Rev. Father Hennessey officiating. The bride, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John F. Simms of Springfield, and the groom, son of Mrs. John W. Kelly, are highly regarded in Washington County. The ceremony featured music by Miss Mary Haydon and Messrs. Louis Cain and Harry Krecker. A wedding feast followed at the groom’s home, with many friends presenting fine gifts and offering congratulations for a long, happy life together.
The Star Amusement Company of Louisville presents six weeks of moving pictures in Springfield Opera House and Washington County. Reviews say the shows are excellent, rivaling Louisville’s best, with life like scenes from city fires to tranquil countryside. New songs and pictures appear each evening with matinees Wednesday and Saturday. Admission is 15 and 10 cents.
Mr J D Shehan of Valley Hill sold his banner crop of tobacco delivered to F R Neale of Springfield last week. The entire crop weighed 11995 pounds and brought 2399 dollars. The article calls it the finest crop ever raised in the area and congratulates Mr Shehan on his success.
The Mackville Baptist Sunday School reports rising interest and turnout. On January 10 1900 the church had 210 in attendance plus about fifty studying at home under Home Department supervision. The cradle roll enrollment also increased and the one year ago attendance was fifty.
Frederic Thompson presents Polly of the Circus starring Edith Taliaferro at Macauley's Theatre Louisville the week of January 18. Polly, a circus rider, spends her life under the canvas until a minister shelters and teaches her. As village scandal grows Polly leaves for the circus but returns to find love and a final curtain as the caravan departs.
Arrangements are made for a winter lecture course at Springfield Baptist Church. Specialists in church work will lecture on popular and instructive topics with no admission fee. The first lecture next Wednesday night will be by Dr. W O Carver of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, on The Biblical Basis of Missions.
In Harrodsburg Kentucky Col Jack Chinn narrowly won the Mercer County Democratic primary for Representative in the Legislature defeating a local option candidate by fifty eight votes. Chinn currently serves as State Senator for the Mercer-Anderson-Franklin district and several county offices were also filled including County Judge John W Hughes County Attorney R W Keenan County Clerk Henry L Gibbs Circuit Clerk Ben C Allin Assessor Eleie Voorhies J M Board J Davenport Coroner Sam Shackelford School Superintendent Migs Ora Adams.
The U D C ladies of Springfield present Mrs Wiggs of the Cabbage Patch at the Opera House next Tuesday. Miss Jones of Cleveland heads the event ensuring strong stage work. Tickets are sold at Red Cross Drug Store for individuals and families.
W C Mudd was riding in a buggy near the mill when a morning train struck, throwing him out. The buggy was demolished and the horse killed. Mudd suffered painful but not dangerous injuries and was taken to Bardstown for County Court attendance, then to his son Dr Modd's home for care, with a few days expected to recover.
Louisville Times reports Captain Wickham led a Sixth District raid on David Klotter’s pool room at Eleventh and Hill. Detectives White Elvin and officers found a poker game with eight men including J D Bass Glyde Harrison Pat Owens Ben Moss Julius Adams Phil Broderick A Hardein and John They were charged. Klotter faces multiple liquor violations and interference with an offer. The accused say the room serves as the Cabbage Patch Club meeting place.
H P Thompson of Willisburg hosted a birthday dinner on January 8 for his fortieth anniversary. Twenty four friends and relatives attended. The dining room opened at twelve, and guests enjoyed the meal together. Attendees included R C G Pinkston and family, D C Showmaker and son, Po Robert Thom and family, Mire Margie, Miss Effie Jenkins.
