War of Races Invasion by Armed Posse Shocks Springfield
In a Tuesday dawn parade an armed posse searched for a fugitive negro who shot a citizen five miles south of Fair Grove last Saturday night. The group resembled Civil War era bands, moving through the Square toward a negro cabin near the old fair grounds. They questioned Charles Pullion, who appeared reluctant to accompany them as they accused him of shooting Marion Gillespie the prior night. Gillespie and companions had quarreled over a purchase, leading to Gilliespie being shot in the abdomen. Pullion was brought back for examination. rumors of Lynch justice circulated but could not be substantiated. The report notes the posse returned to the city, the suspect in county jail awaiting grand jury action. The piece also covers other local notices and ads.
