OUR PIONEERS OF SPRINGFIELD SETTLEMENT ON GREENWOOD TRAIL
In 1829 Madison and J J Campbell left Tennessee seeking homes, crossing the Mississippi and Arkansas to reach the future Springfield area. They traced Delawaretown and Kickapoo Prairie, naming landmarks, then returned east to Tennessee before returning to Missouri in 1890 with families and helpers. Their trek covered Farms and towns across Cape Girardeau, St Francois, Caledonia, Steelville, and Waynesville, ending near present-day Springfield as the first settlers established a path for the region.
