Springfield society notes and local happenings mixed with court updates
A dense column records Springfield urban life with church activity and civic planning alongside legal matters. It mentions upcoming construction in North Springfield, business firms like Prominent as era, and community shifts. The piece covers court schedules, tax matters, and a recent murder trial reference, ending with local social greetings and marriage notices.
Walnut Grove Christmas feast and church sale fun
Walnut Grove residents and neighboring towns filled the new church hall for Christmas Eve and Christmas night events. About 300 attended the first gathering with music by a local band and organist Mrs. Pet Muteher, plus a cake auction for Miss Scott Dorsey and Miss Carrie Hursh. A second night added more singing, another cake sale, and marriages of two couples, with assets near 170 dollars to finish the church house.

A Frip to Washington Years Ago
In February 1857 a Missouri party traveled by train and river route to Washington to witness President Buchanan’s inauguration. They recount border ruffian times, a grand but orderly ceremony, visits to Mt Vernon, and notable figures such as Thomas Reynolds and James Craig, ending with reflections on Missouri prosperity and a long, vivid travelogue.

Cave Spring Masonic officers installed amid holiday cheer
Christmas passed quietly in Cave Spring with social merriment. The feature was the installation of Br. Nicholas Lodge officers on Waraday night. Key officers installed include W.M. Butler, P.M. Harrison Skeeny, J.M. Wilbur, and Deacon Watson. An address followed, a fine supper was served, and brotherly affection spread among members and friends as the Old Year ended.
