How A Rain Storm Altered Georgia's Secession Tale
A New York Times correspondent recalls A H Stephens in Crawfordsville Georgia describing secession as a prodigious blunder yet defending the right to leave. He recounts the 1861 Montgomery convention, the rainstorm that swayed Georgia delegates, Stephens’s cautious leadership, and Davis’s rising prominence amid a bitter political push for a new government.
