The Judges First Love in a Boyhood Reverie
A lengthy reminiscence in which a narrator recalls childhood portraits of Mary Jane, from a freckled ten year old to a sixteen year old in pink gingham, detailing schoolyard favors, first loves, and rival Sammy Sloper. The tale traces later college plans, a faded romance with Mary Jane, and the rise of Sammy Sloper through business and status, ending with reflections on wealth, marriage, and social circles.
