Debates Over Hayes Policy and South Carolina Drafts
A long account records letters and testimonies surrounding Reconstruction era politics. It describes Democratic figures like Brown and Matthews pressing for assurances from Hayes on southern policy, the handling of South Carolina and Louisiana, and the withdrawal of federal troops. Hampton’s Washington visit is outlined, urging recognition only in courtesy and troop removal.
