Beausejour Jaycees sponsor a town hall, inviting mayoral and council nominees and current councillors to address trusteeship over past years and to share views on improving the town’s civic future. The event aims to inform residents about leadership and local needs.
The event is set for Wednesday October 21 in the Beausejour Civic hall with all nominees and sitting representatives invited. A house to house canvas has been underway to explain the Town Hall concept and large poster displays will illuminate the electorate.
At a October 16 special council meeting the Village of Lac du Bonnet heard from Manitoba Power Commission reps about installing eight mercury vapor lights on PTH 11 from Park Ave to Fourth St and one hundred watt light at Park Ave and Lake Ave. The village will then have 29 of 100 watt lights, two 150 watt lights and 18 mercury vapor lights at a total cost of $158.22 per month.
The Eastern Manitoba Development Board will hold its annual meeting at Lorette Parish Hall on Thursday October 29. Registration begins at 1 pm with business sessions after 1:30 pm. Delegates include M L A Reeves and mayors from Municipalities. The agenda features highway work advocations and an officer election, with about 300 registered attendees.
Neighbors north of Beausejour turned out to thresh William Schultz’s crop after he lost a leg in spring. J C Szena John Przdnowek and Joseph Szajewski organized the effort with many locals bringing equipment. A straw slicker break slowed progress briefly until Edward Kanarowski repaired the tool.
The Seven Sisters Bowling League opened the Fall Term with four teams of five at Beausejour alleys 26 miles away. Officers are President Charlie Precious Secretary Herb Baker Treasurer Ken Higgins Transportation Joe Sauer and Fred King. Standings show Team 1 at eight points, Team 4 at seven, Team 2 at six, Team 3 at three. High single game by C Precious 255 and high three game total by H Baker 612.
The initial of three Bristol Freighters delivered to Trans-Canada Air Lines for Montreal to New York Toronto and Winnipeg routes. The six ton cargo capacity spans 2300 cubic feet with nose doors opening full width for bulk freight and can accommodate three standard automobiles making it North America's first major scheduled airline freighter.
The Manitoba Government Liquor Commission store in Beausejour opened on Friday October 16 with G Albright of Winnipeg as manager and Allan Hoban and F Rumak as assistants. The store will serve much of North Eastern Manitoba from Kirkness district east of the Ontario boundary to Pine Falls and north to the Greater Winnipeg Water line in the south.
Council meeting led by Mayor H J Parent discussed changes to the nuisance ground plan as surveyed. A three-member delegation will interview William Cardiff to finalize exact limits, with nominations for council and school trustees announced and an October 23 election set.
A special Bird's Hill Recreation Club meeting in Community Hall saw Girl's Softball, Men's Hard Ball, and Men's Hockey vote on amalgamation. all but two favored uniting with the Recreation Club. A Halloween Masquerade Dance was planned with prizes for adults and children, and a constitution committee was formed with Bill Routley as chair. Representatives include Bill Swistun, Les Tait, Philip Rebeck, and teens Francis Salmonson and H. McBeth.
Best wishes go to Adeline Stupak and Dorothy Cieszecki who are now employed in Winnipeg. The notice highlights their move and new positions in the Manitoba city.
Lac du Bonnet council met October 13 with Mayor Edythe M Brown and five councillors. The village will purchase a 3 by 6 foot Union Jack for the War Memorial flag pole under construction. Premier Campbell to receive thanks for cabinet action on new P T H No 11.
Lettonia marks 41 years of postal service by John Alksne who never missed a day. He served through tents and board shack offices, traveling by row boat, sleigh, motor boat, and car. Mail will move to Lac du Bonnet post office, with thanks for a job well done.
The Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church hosted the September 26 wedding of Leona Cyncora to Johnny Holyk, son of Mr. and Mrs. P. Holyk. Rev. Borys officiated as Leona wore a lace gown with nylon net trim and a three-quarter length veil. Bridesmaids included Bernice Cyncora, Irene Holyk, and Adeline Kru.
Stella Kazina of Tyndall wed John Chorney of CHORNEY-KAZINA in a ceremony at St. Michael’s church Tyndall on Saturday October 3. Attendants included Stan ley Holyk Eddy Gmeterik and Donnie Stefaniuk with Gloria Cyncora and Dorene as flower girls. Reception followed in Lady wood hall with plans to reside in Springwell after a trip to Toronto. Continued on Page 5.
The annual ratepayers meeting at Whitemouth Municipal hall on Tuesday October 13 drew a fair crowd due to farmers working fields. Reeve Edward Henderson was re elected and thanked the community for 30 years of service. Complaints about high assessments to be taken to the court for revision on October 28. A drainage project for certain lands was planned. Ward 4 saw nominations for Geo Berrick and Elmer Altsadt after Herbert Knopf did not seek reelection.
Brokenhead Rural Municipality held its monthly meeting with Reeve Art Trapp presiding. The minutes showed progress, a potential need for a new hall, and safety concerns after a ceiling plaster fall near Ward Four. Council approved street light upgrades and signers for school attendance.
St Demetrius Greek Catholic Church in Ladywood hosted the christening of infant Larry John Boleschuk on Sunday October 11. Rev. S Borys officiated with godparents Mrs M Polson and Mr J Mybroda of Winnipeg. A family dinner followed at the Boleschuk home with relatives and friends.
Red Cross swimming and water safety director W LeBlanc presented awards on October 8 at the Seven Sisters Falls community hall to pupils who passed summer water safety and swimming exams. Junior awards to Gina Raines Theresa Sauer Marlene Krampetz Keith Gibbons. Intermediate grants to Grant Ligertwood Marjorie Peterson. Senior to James Gibbons. Two films followed, including Red Cross Blood donations and a sports reel on curing.
Lac du Bonnet residents met on October 13 to discuss sewage disposal along the water front. Property owners asked the Manitoba Hydro Electric Board to build a sewage disposal plant for fourteen houses in the village and its subdivision, to be affected by rising water.
David Sharpe, fresh from Europe, is back in Pine Falls and at work in the mill. He traveled with George Will to London for a coronation and toured Britain and continental Europe before flying to England and Canada to resume work on October 1. Will headed home by boat. Sharpe brought back many mementos and vivid memories of a remarkable journey.
