Manitoba’s highways department will arrange a meeting next month with Manitoba Ontario and Minnesota engineers to discuss the Manitoba extension of the Mississippi Parkway. Topics include the link up with Manitoba and the extension to the Manitoba boundary pending Minnesota legislature approval and access roads into the Northwest Angle and Ontario near Shoal Lake.
Residents are invited to support the Lac du Bonnet Memorial Hall built twenty years ago from funds raised by locals. Powerview council met on Tuesday November 13 with Mayor H Richardson and all members present. The clerk announced Juvenile Court cases December 10 in St Boniface involving six children under Children's Aid Society care. By law 7/1956 for liquor and beer outlets passed on third reading after voters supported both. Council approved $135.35 payment to Selkirk for previous aid, ordered new office equipment, planned a street light, and urged Highway 11 repairs. Garbage spraying on the nuisance ground to be bulldozed before winter. Accounts totaling $3012.29 were approved.
A new office building designed by Moody and Moore for The Manitoba Hydro-Electric Board is estimated at 750000 dollars. Located at Harrow Street and Frederic Avenue in Winnipeg, construction is expected to start late this year. The structure will include a load control centre linking the Hydro-Electric Board City Hydro and Manitoba Power Commission systems for instant demand recording and direct dispatcher communication.
Four delegations appeared before the Village of Lac du Bonnet council on November 12 with Mayor and all councillors, hearing complaints on sidewalk conditions, parking near theatres, and traffic on Park Avenue. Immigration official spoke for Theo Terra’s six month business proposal. By-law No. 35 terms queried. No. 61 read under Liquor Act. Finance committee approved accounts totaling 13,935.08, including 13,033.00 for the Lac du Bonnet S.D. 1235.
Miss Helen McKercher, Director of the Home Economics Service, Ontario Department of Agriculture, told the 25th annual National 4-H Club Week delegates in Toronto that bright career prospects await young women in home economics. She cited paths from dietitian to researcher, teacher to homemaker, and noted demand far exceeds supply as the country grows. The groundwork in 4-H activities, she said, could inspire Canadian girls to enter the field for personal and national benefit.
Helena McAndrew health nurse with Selkirk Health Unit spoke to 43 Lac du Bonnet Home and School Association members about the nurse’s duties and available help for special needs. The event included a screening of The Age of Turmoil and a Q A session led by President A W Brown. Lunch closed the evening as new committees were formed.
The Tyndall branch of the Canadian Legion and Ladies Auxiliary welcomed District No. 10 Legion members and District No. 7 Ladies Auxiliary to a rally on October 20. Supper was prepared by the Tyndall Ladies Auxiliary for about 140 guests. Duff Roblin MLA spoke, introduced by Graham of Stonewall, who chaired. Legion and Ladies meetings followed with chairmanship by Graham and Mrs. V. Costello. Provincial speakers were Mrs. McIntosh and Mrs. McQueen. Next rally planned for spring in Selkirk, Manitoba.
About sixty members of the Winnipeg Electric Employees Federated Council of the One Big Union gathered at Anderson Hall Great Falls on Friday November 1 to honor Mr. A. Lee former General Plant Chairman with a testimonial stay. Eric Bloomquist General Chairman credited Lee as an original organizer of the Power Plants in 1934. Lee thanked the group and received an oil painting by Arni Sigurdson depicting the mouth of the Whitemouth River. Entertainment by Gordon Henschel elicited an enthusiastic response and arrangements were led by Jack Kearns.
