Lac du Bonnet Village Council Meets in Busy Session

Lac du Bonnet Manitoba council held a long meeting Monday with May or E Brown and Councillors W A Campbell and R McIntosh present. Absent were Emil Kiziak visiting Ontario and Carl Hapke in hospital. Debates covered sidewalk request on PTH 11, culvert replacement, Justice of the Peace vacancy, welfare case, and Hydro Board unsigned lakefront members with cost constraints noted.

Remembrance Day Services At Whitemouth School

A Remembrance Day service was held at Whitemouth school conducted by Rev. H. W. Parne who spoke on the meaning of the day. Organizing duties were by principal Gordyun Henderson with students participating, including Alan Stark reciting How Shall I Serve My Country and Katherine Steiner on piano. Poppy sales raised 14.53 among the students.

Remembrance Service At Pine Falls Cenotaph

At 1 am on November 11 the Pine Falls Cenotaph hosted a brief service honoring fallen soldiers. Attendees included Pine Falls Legion No. 64 B.ES.L. and Ladies Auxiliary, schoolchildren, and townspeople as a mill whistle signaled a one minute silence. Wreaths were laid and prayers given by Canon Walter and Rev Fr Valcourt.

Remembrance Day Service in Lac du Bonnet Hall

A Remembrance Day service at Lac du Bonnet Memorial Hall included Legion members, auxiliary, students and residents with Rev. Maxwell leading. A cenotaph march followed a moment of silence at 11, the last post and lament played, and the Honour Roll read by Frank Hanton. Wreaths honored the Legion, town, auxiliary, and school.

Pine Falls Legion Remembrance Day Service Held

The Pine Falls Legion and 40th Field Squadron RCE along with Pine Falls high school cadet corps and Legion Auxiliary members attended a Remembrance Day service Sunday at 8:30 p.m. in the Chateau. The service opened with O Canada and a minute of silence. Canon W. J. Walter led prayers, the United Church choir sang, Rev. Fr. Messier gave an address, and Mr. R. C. Willett presented the Last Post with Pipe-Major W. McLeod playing The Lament followed by Reveille. Benediction closed the service.

Pine Falls Trades Honor Late Hibbert With Ward Furnishings

The Pine Falls Trades and Labor Council presented Pine Falls Hospital with a two bed semi private ward in memory of W. H. Hibbert a former council president. Dignitaries including Mrs Hibbert Glen Fraser Dr K T Johnson and union leaders attended the dedication and plaque unveiling. The ward contains two beds lounge chairs bedside tables and a bedside radio.

Two Pine Falls Men Receive Bravery Awards

On Sunday September 13 1953 a party from the 46th Field Squadron R C E held a water maneuver on Lake Winnipeg. The Assault Boat overturned and the party remained in the water for over four hours before reaching a small island and later being rescued. Lieut J D Salloum and Sgt S P Berthelette of Pine Falls were awarded the Queen's Commendation for Brave Conduct at a ceremony on Saturday November 6 in the Pine Falls Arena. Major General Rodgers presided, with Cadet Corps and band in attendance, as Salloum and Berthelette received their awards and citations read aloud. A parade and reception followed at the Legion Hall with music by the Stardusters.

Obituary notices from Lac du Bonnet and Brightstone area

Obituaries report the death of Eli Haavisto age unknown in Lac du Bonnet with funeral in Riverland Lutheran church and burial in Riverland Cemetery. Survived by three sisters and three brothers, with pallbearers named. Also noted is the Catholic service for Maria Zaborniak, 79, at Brightstone with Rev Ferus and Russell Funeral Home, survivor list including five daughters and seven sons plus many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Maria born in Poland came to Canada in 1904, lived near Cooks Creek then Brightstone.

Lac du Bonnet council passes 15 page plumbing bylaw

The bylaw regulates licenses and technical plumbing standards for houses and businesses. It requires a plumbing permit for new buildings and for alterations, with fines up to 56 dollars for breaches. A master plumber's license is required to work in the village, with fees for initial and renewal. A plumbing inspector will approve plans, test completed work, and permit fees fund inspections, with Stephen named as inspector.

Seven Sisters Hospital Guild plans fairs and parties

The Seven Sisters Hospital Guild met November 8 with twenty four members. Mrs Hig nell chaired and Mrs Carruthers was recording secretary. They scheduled a Fun Fair for November 19 at 8 p.m. and a Christmas Party on December 13 at the Community Hall. Members are invited to bring a 50 cent parcel gift and two small prize items.

Intermediate Hockey Planned for Pine Falls

The Winniboine Intermediate A Hockey League reformed with teams from Stonewall Gimli Selkirk and Pine Falls for Sunday November 7 in Stonewall. Elmwood has applied to join and would be represented by two members if accepted. Final league arrangements to be decided at a Selkirk meeting on November 14.

Fur Breeders Field Day Held at Victoria Beach

A Manitoba Fur and Game Station sponsored event at Victoria Beach Pine Crest Fur Farm on Saturday October 30 showcased standard mink and mutation varieties. Winnipeg judges evaluated entries while ranchers won prizes and ribbons. Visitors included Deputy Minister T G Cowan and Mrs Cowan, Dr R Kirk of the University of Manitoba fur and game station, and their spouses. Mr Cowan delivered the highlight address.

Annual Banquet and Dance Held by Pine Falls Legion

The Pine Falls BESL Legion branch No 64 held its annual Remembrance Day Banquet and Dance on Thursday at 6 30 p m in the Legion Hall drawing a record crowd. Speakers included Dr A Savage animal pathologist at the University of Manitoba and G N Stewart on the Ladies Auxiliary toast. The Auxiliary celebrated 25 years and honored ten charter members. Dancing followed to the Stardusters.

Annual Poultry Show at Beausejour Sets High Hopes

Beausejour Agricultural Society plans a premier poultry show on December 4 at Ukrainian Hall Beausejour with entries by 11 a.m. judging by a qualified committee. Grey Cup Night Echoes Winnipeg Loss and Grey Cup Weather

Flags were at half mast as the Blue Bombers failed to clinch the Western Conference title. Tempting forecasts note a bleak Grey Cup day for Manitobans with Edmonton favored after finishing atop the regular schedule. Poor Edmonton weather and a 20 degree snow covered field shaped the game night.

Eight-year-old uses umbrella as parachute lands in hospital

In London Ontario eight-year-old Richard Gault jumped from a second story using an umbrella as a parachute. He suffered severe head injuries and was taken to hospital.
