Whitemouth Chamber Tackles Mercury Vapor Lights
A Whitemouth Chamber of Commerce meeting appointed a committee of A. Zeisler L. Dowswell and Chas Hunt to study mercury vapor street lights and seek ratepayer opinions. The group set December 9 for the annual dinner at the school auditorium with J P Schmidt Dr Bilysmky and R Keynes arranging invitations and tickets. Mr M G J McMullen Manitoba Chamber of Commerce secretary will speak. John Molinski and Zeisler will attend the St James convention on November 15 and 19. J P Schmidt was nominated for the Manitoba Chamber of Commerce executive for Springfield.

Pinawa Man Found Dead in His Home
Pinawa resident Mr. Jacob Wall was discovered deceased inside his residence on a Friday in November. Telephone workers and neighbors noted his absence from prior days, with Dr. L G Gamme citing a personal safety related wound as the cause. The exact time of death could not be determined but estimated around October 10.

New State of Officers Elected for Curling Club
Lac du Bonnet Curling Club held a November meeting electing Ed Chapman as president and Art Brown as 1st vice president for 1953 54 with Gordon Donaldson as 2nd vice president Eddie Malyk as secretary treasurer and H P Smith continuing as past president. The board includes Mrs Wardrop and others. A novelty bonspiel for members only was proposed, with two matched rock sets planned to improve play. The ladies club will host its North Eastern bonspiel January 23 24 with R Cohen Roy Freund and Ray Wilsone named to the entertainment committee.

Inquest Resumed For M. Hanratty
The inquest into the death of Michael Hanratty was resumed at the Municipal hall on Monday November 2 under coroner Dr G L Gunne. He was drowned in the Winnipeg river on June 2 while loading gravel on a barge. The tractor began moving in reverse by unexplained means, pulling Hanratty into the water. the jury found drowning but could not explain how the idle tractor became alive and rolled off the barge.

Birds Hill Halloween Masquerade Draws Big Crowd
The Bird's Hill recreation club held a successful Hallowe'en masquerade dance at the Community hall with Mel Bruce's band. Prizes honored costumes across categories. Les Tait directed the entertainment and Mrs. Philip Rebeck led refreshments. Winners included Peggy Andrews Raggedy Anne and Alf Langton as a short-trousered school boy. The club also ran a whist drive and plans a Sadie Hawkins sauce with chicken supper.

Eastern Manitoba highway plans for 1954 approved for North East
The Eastern Manitoba Development Board endorsed a 1954 program adding six North East highways and three new entrances north of the Red River. Proposals include No 99 from Kirkness to Libau, No 11 from Brookfield to Crescent Flag, and No 32 toward the Sandy River with gravel work. Three new entrances are planned west of Lockport, south of Beausejour, and south of Hadashville. The plan details a broader aim to complete all weather roads from Minnesota to the Whiteshell and Winnipeg River.

New Elma School Opens with 1910–14 Legacy Replaced
Elma officially opened a new three room school on Friday October 30 attended by over 300 guests and students. The modern frame and stucco building includes a basement space for expansion and an unfinished auditorium with modern oil heating. Dedication prayers were led by Rev. S Pienta and Rev J Kamenecky, and the ribbon was cut by Shirley Proceviat with Roberta Smorong.

Manitoba outlines plans to take over and designate portions of PTH routes. The proposal includes PTH No 33 from South Junction to Middlebro and PTH No 89 from Piney corner to the Minnesota border, linking Minnesota 89 with Manitoba No 53. It also calls for grade and gravel work from Vita road to South Junction and paving from Ste Anne corner to Steinbach, along with improving access roads from Sun to all-weather standard. Brokenhead Students Present Halloween Concert
Brokenhead school junior room sponsored Hallowe en concert directed by Miss N Lapchinski held October 29 in the Brokenhead auditorium. The program featured recitations dances songs and a masquerade. Masquerade winners were Fancy Beverly Krawchuk and Connie Kindefora. Margery Mariash chaired. A lunch by high school girls and district ladies closed the evening. Students thank all who helped.

War Memorial Unveiling Honours Veterans in Lac du Bonnet
Mayor Edythe M. Brown presided at the unveiling of the War Memorial by the Canadian Legion Lac du Bonnet Branch No. 164. Over 50 legionnaires marched to the scene with an RCAF band from Winnipeg as the Union Jack was raised. Sixteen names from the two world wars were read from the honour roll. Group Captain Ross Ingalls gave the dedication address. Wreaths honored the Queen and the services, Silver Cross mothers, the Village, the Legion, and the Legion Ladies Auxiliary. The ceremony closed with a Lament by Ne'l Sutherland, a lunch, and a dinner at the Lakeview Hotel for attendees.

Annual Curling Meeting Held at Whitemouth
The Whitemouth Curling Club held its annual meeting on Wednesday November 4 electing Andy Henderson as president Sandy Cousins as vice president Aby Zeisler as secretary Joe Schmidt as treasurer and naming a large executive list. A decision to install double windows to improve spectator visibility was approved and a combined meeting with the Chambers of Commerce is planned for November 25 at the Curling Club with expectations of strong attendance.

Farewell party for H Springman and wife in Lac du Bonnet
A farewell event at Memorial Hall Lac du Bonnet on November 6 marked the Springmans exit after selling their business to Hudson's Bay Company. They lived in Lac du Bonnet for nine years with Hugh Smith as master of ceremonies. Speakers included J Sparman Water Co op J W Wade Chamber of Commerce and Mayor Edéthe Brown. Gifts were presented to Mrs. Springman and Mr. Springman received a travel bag and electric shaver. A money contribution went to the Lac du Bonnet War Memorial Fund plus a $100 donation from Mr Springman.
