Premier Douglas L. Campbell dedicates the 114000 hp Pine Falls hydro plant and bridge over the Winnipeg River in two ceremonies on March 25. A bronze plaque marks the project’s gains from 1949 to 1953, including unit start in 1951 and completion in 1952.
Pine Falls grade XI pupils accompanied by Mr and Mrs Stamler visited Bissett on Saturday March 14 traveling by bombardier. They toured the refinery Saturday afternoon and explored underground Sunday forenoon. Evening activities included bowling a sing song and dancing with Doris Anderson Doris Campbell and Bassett's orchestra.
The Pine Falls Fish and Game association met at Manitou lodge on Thursday night March 19. With Jack Dulake chairing in President Eric Johnson's absence, Ernie Boote served as secretary treasurer. The group kept the annual fee at $2.50 by absorbing a 25 cent rise and proposed a trap-shoot tournament. Members urged observation of laws on illegal shooting and discussed amending live bait rules for use in their native stream. Officers elected for 1953 were Jack Dulake president Ernie Coote vice president Alf Askin secretary treasurer.
Whitemouth Consolidated School filled to capacity for Talent Night on Saturday March 21. Jim Thomson of the Whitemouth chamber of commerce welcomed guests. Districts represented included Whitemouth Elma and Rennie. Lead act Mrs F Kellner with a lineup of singers choirs and performers. John Moinski entertained drawing laughter. radio sponsorship prize went to Mrs H Nelson.
Local 118 of the Manitoba Farmers’ Union held its annual meeting on March 19 electing the president secretary and board members for the year ending Oct 31. A $25 donation was made to head office for the building fund and a $1 per member annual fee was proposed. J Tiede was named auditor. Lorraine and Milton Kroker will report on local MFA activities. Walter Golke will study Hansard and report on government farm policies.
Helen Rupert 78 of Victoria Beach died March 3 1953 in Beausejour district hospital born Saskatchewan came to Victoria Beach 76 years ago married John Rupert in 1895 graduated into funeral service with Renshaw of Beausejour. Survived by multiple children grandchildren and great grandchildren. Modrzejewski wife of Joseph survived by four sons and one daughter with siblings mentioned. funeral arrangements noted in Beausejour.
The Brokenhead local of the farmers union met on March 25 with Ed Burowsky in the chair. A summary of activities and increased membership were reported. Secretary Treasurer Steve Pasishnik announced a $215 surplus for the past year. Officers were elected: President Ed Burkowski, VP Peter Shumila, Sec-Treas Steve Pasishnik, and others named to executive, education, grievance and social committees.

Mrs. Katerine Modrzejewski age 61 of Beausejour died at her residence on March 14 leaving family to mourn. The obituary notes she was a longtime resident with ties to the local community and offers condolences to relatives and friends.
Mrs Johanna Puzianowski widow of Frank Puzianowski died on March 7 at Hadashville Manitoba in her 52nd year Funeral services were conducted Friday March 13 in Hadashville Manitoba
The Frince Edward hotel Brandon has been chosen as the site for Manitoba Federation of Agriculture and Co operation provincial convention. A three day conference will run June 23 to 25 1953 following seven district meetings. Rural delegates will consolidate local resolutions before forwarding to the provincial gathering. Local associations receive one delegate per ten members to the district convention and one per hundred to the provincial meeting.
Manitoba reports 36 home related deaths in January and February 1954. February fatalities include 16 home deaths with seven falls and five fires. Nine general accident deaths involve aeroplane, falls, firearms, and drowning. Industrial accident deaths drop to one outside the Accident Prevention branch.
Mrs. Puzianowski will be laid to rest in the local cemetery with interment arranged by Russel Funeral Home. She is survived by her mother Mrs. Josephine Medynski of Hadashville, four sons Rudolph Afros and August of Vancouver BC Albert of Hadashville, two daughters Agatha in Winnipeg and Josie Hadashville, four sisters Mrs Helen Corcoran of Chicago NL Mrs Bernice Martin of San Francisco California Mrs Millie Iwanyshyn of Hadashville and Molly Medynski of Toronto, three brothers Mike Joe Wolanski of Winnipeg Eddie Medynski of Vancouver BC, and one grandchild.
A record 29 rinks competed in Whitemouth Curling Club bonspiel events. Irvin Klepatz skipped the winning four in the first event after an extra end, with Dave Cousins rink second in the championship. Sandy Cousins won the second event over P R Paulsen, and Doug Fotheringham’s rink defeated Clarence Nelson’s high school rink in the third. Prizes were donated by local businesses and the club.
Marion Soluk, a Thalberg girl, fell from a sleigh and was run over by two wheels of a car being towed on the sleigh. No injuries were sustained as the wheels passed over her leg. The sleigh, pulled by Pete Letwin, carried Marion and other children home from school after a stretch ride with Letwin and his horses.
Joyce Audrey Skagfeld and Joffre Rene Beaubien wed at St Boniface cathedral chapel on March seven at five in the afternoon. Bridesmaid Irene Skagfeld, best man Rollin Schwinghammer, officiant Rev J J McGarry. Out of town guests from St George Pine Falls and Shilo. Reception at the bride’s home on Nichel avenue St Vital. They will reside in Pine Falls Man.
Mrs Rosina Wittmeir of Thalberg died March 1 at Bethany Old Folks home in Middlechurch at age 90. Funeral service was held March 8 in Thalberg Lutheran church with interment in the church yard cemetery. Beausejour’s Russell Funeral home was in charge. Surviving are three sons Fred Beausejour Adolph Thalberg John Stead and three daughters Mrs O Greschki Beausejour Mrs Joe Steffen Winnipeg Mrs Fred Zierk Stead.
Mrs Naomi Hardy, 90, of Rennie died Monday at Saints Nursing Home in Winnipeg. Funeral held at C A Hardy home with burial in Rennie Cemetery. Rev Boyd of Keewatin officiated. Born in Sudbrook Lincolnshire England, she came to Manitoba 49 years ago and moved to Rennie 29 years ago.
