Schreyer speeches on progress and schools in Manitoba

Premier Schreyer outlined plans to expand rural communications and roads into mining and timber regions, pledging no insurance rate hikes for two years. He noted loan support for Fort Fashions Corporation and discussed mining delays at Bernie Lake, plus potential compromises on aid to denominational and private schools and integration of private colleges into public universities. He received applause, mingled with guests, and praised Mrs. Schreyer as a first lady of Manitoba.

Infants Most Abused of Children

Manitoba reports show infants under one year are the most abused group. Health minister Rene E. Toupin notes the six month tally to December 31 records 16 of 49 cases in that age range. The registry, begun July 1 last year, aims to protect children through reporting and follow up while cautioning that parent rights are preserved and legal action is a last resort.
