Roadside Planting Urged by Manitoba Official at Horticulture Meeting

Deputy Minister of Public Works George Collins urged greater roadside plantings to improve highway eye appeal at the Manitoba Horticultural Association’s 49th annual convention. He said the Highways Branch will focus on construction and maintenance, while private and public bodies should promote plantings and roadside facilities for travelers. Collins noted 1,049,519 feet of snow hedges have been planted and highlighted rules requiring department approval for plantings within 125 feet of provincial trunk highways, with minimum right of way standards of 150 feet, 200 feet on key highways and park entrances.

Smoke bursts from cannister in hotel washroom

In Port Arthur guests in the ladies beverage room were forced into the street by dense smoke. Chief George Chastey donned a gas mask and found an army type smoke cannister going full blast in the washroom.

Manitoba’s net agricultural production rose in 1946 to 188.35 million dollars, or 3 363 per farm, a 21 percent rise from 1945 and below the 1944 peak. Field crops totalled about 102 million, dairy reached 22.64 million, poultry 16.86 million, fur farming 1.28 million.

Beausejour Women's Institute Holds March Meeting

The Beausejour Women’s Institute met with 37 members and many visitors including 12 high school girls. Mrs McBean district president spoke on the global reach and value of membership while Dr F Chown outlined local health work and two National Film Board films were shown. The monthly whist drive on March 19 at Beausejour Hotel supports the Memorial Fund, with April’s first Tuesday program planned.
