Daring dog defeats wolf at Beausejour chicken coop

Mr and Mrs H Schaffrott of Beausejour credit their dog for stopping a Big Bad Wolf at their chicken house Friday morning after the dog warned and faced the intruder in a five to ten minute duel. The family has suffered chicken losses this year and rewarded the dog with a T bone.

Seven Sisters Curlers Visit Pinawa for Trophy Challenge

Seven Sisters and Pinawa curlers met over Feb 22 23 to defend the W E Co Anderson trophy. Pinawa won the first game while Seven Sisters won both games in Seven Sisters on Sunday despite bad weather. Traveling with the rink were spectators and family members. a dinner was served and the return trip was hampered by snow.

Giant Carnival At Pine Falls Nets $1300.06

The 1947 Ice Follies at Pine Falls, staged by T Carey and the Winter Club carnival committee, transformed the rink into a western tableau with a painted backdrop by Nick Smarang. Despite chilly weather, crowds filled the grandstand for a program patterned after Oklahoma with Miss Reta Coulombe crowned queen and gifts presented by the Winter Club and Imperial Oil Co.

Connie Gabel of Ladywood was crowned Miss Ladywood and queen of Eastern Manitoba at Beausejour as part of a Winter Carnival and Country Fair weekend supporting the Beausejour-Brokenhead War Memorial Fund. Maids of honor were Doreen Dutchak Cecilia Langner and Beryl Nichols. gate prize went to Miss J Weidman of Beausejour.

Fitting Eulogy for Mrs Henderson Maternity Nurse

Praise honors Mrs. Ed Henderson for forty years of maternity nursing service. She served without a doctor for much of a year, often braving deep snow and long drives to aid the ill. The Hendersons ran a large Whitemouth district farm with Mrs. T. G. Erskine noted in the record.

Newlyweds Return to Start Home Life in Bissett

Congratulations to Mr and Mrs Dick Wynne who have settled back in Bissett after thirteen years in the town. Dick, a carpenter, returned last year to work with the mine after completing a CWA carpentry course and army service. Mrs Wynne served with the CWAC during wartime. Also in town, Manitob a Telephone System line crew Jim Stanbridge and assistants Jack Reckie and Keith Fumerton visit, and Mrs O Connor visits with son and daughter in law Pat and Mr O Connor before heading East.

Red Cross Sets Five Million Target for 1947 Appeal

The Canadian Red Cross will seek $5,000,000 in its National Appeal opening March 3, a reduction from $5,500,000. National Commissioner Dr. Fred W. Routley said the minimum needs are set to cover the 1947 budget and extend peacetime relief, with gross requirements at $6,241,000 and anticipated receipts above $750,000 from hospitals and other donations.

Friendship Glows After Great Falls Home Is Razed By Fire

A Great Falls couple loses their home in a February Sunday fire while they were away visiting. Neighbor Alex Bruneau alerted others after seeing flames, and hockey teams and residents rushed to help but could not save the house. A community shower aided the Howes as friends rallied. Mrs Forbes, daughter of pioneer John Thompson Forbes, is among the locals.

Farewell Party Honors Mr and Mrs A B Smith Before Coastal Move

Mr and Mrs A B Smith were feted Wednesday evening February 26 in United Church club rooms by Pine Falls Lodge No 63 LO OF and Coronation Rebekah Lodge No 51. Guests enjoyed a card game with prizes won by Mrs C Conborough and Mrs C Dean while L Magnusson and A B Robinson claimed high and consolation for the men. An entertaining skit featured Jack Aseltine as host, with Mike Bachynski portraying the harassed packing of the Smiths and Jim Lyon as the bedraggled Oddfellow, followed by a lively house-dress gag and a finale crate caper. The event marked the couple’s departure to their coastal home.
