Farm News Shredder Harvesters and Forage Conditioning
Shredder harvesters evolved from corn pulverizers with blowers to deliver material to wagons. They cut with blunt members, offering simple design and lower cost, yet hazards from stones and dirt near the ground can cause damage and rough fields. Conditioning materials like ground grain, beet pulp, molasses, and sodium metabisulphite have been tried to improve silage quality and fermentation under varying weather.

Agriculture in Wales Highlights Hill Sheep Farming
Harold Webber reports five days in Western Wales focusing on rugged hill farms near Aberystwyth and Llandudno. He notes severe climate, poor soil, low lime and phosphate, and grazing capacity about one sheep per acre. Welsh Mountain, Kerry, and Clun sheep predominate, with farming aided by the Welsh Plant Breeding Station at Aberystwyth.

Use of Sodium Metabisulphite in Wet Silage Storage
Immature grass and legume silage stored in rain should use sodium metabisulphite to improve appearance. Not advised for dry or wilted forage as a dry powder added at eight pounds per ton reduces undesirable fermentation. It does not boost nutritive value and requires following container safety cautions. Cost runs just over one Melar per ton.
