Milner Road Damaged By Wood Trucks

Milner Road suffered significant damage after heavy wood trucks passed through. At the Bonnet Council meeting Reeve E Wojciechowski and councillors discussed the issue, with the Reeve set to attend a Beausejour conference on power transmission. Several council payments were approved including large sums to H. F. Waters and Winnipeg Electric Co. for services and utilities.

The Canadian National Institute for the Blind tag day in Pine Falls raised 76.10 dollars on Saturday June 14. Auxiliary members under Mrs. Martin Bosma canvassed door to door with volunteers. several named women covered the townsite Rock area and West St. George.

Plucky lad saves chum from death at river dock

Eight year old Jack Gordon acted quickly when four year old Barry Kemball fell from a river dock. He followed rising bubbles to the boy and pulled him to the surface and to the bank where Barry recovered. Heed warnings about open docks to prevent future accidents.

Beausejour Man Sentenced for Assault on RCMP Corporal

Jacob Leonhardt alias Jack Stowe of Winnipeg appeared in Beausejour police court before Magistrate L S Matlin and was convicted of assaulting RCMP Corporal J Bembridge at Hoban's Park on May 24. He received six months at Headingly and is already serving a two year less one day term for theft.

Hotel Keeper Joe Shedler Moves to Brantford Hotel

Joe Shedler formerly ran a large Whitemouth district farm until selling out and has purchased the Prince Edward hotel in Brantford Ontario. In a letter to Mrs. T. G. Erskine he says he hopes friends will write after learning of his new location.

Prof Harrison to Visit Poland on FAO Mission

Prof T J Harrison of Canada joins a FAO mission to Poland to assess agricultural conditions and plan rehabilitation after war damage. The 10 member team, including six Americans and one each from Northern Ireland Denmark the Netherlands and Canada, will operate with Polish officials. Harrison leaves Washington June 18 and returns early October after meetings in Amsterdam.

Minnedosa Editor Wins Dominion Textile Editorial Award

R. J. Sanderson of the Minnedosa Tribune won the 1947 Dominion Textile Editorial Award for Manitoba weekly newspapers. The St James Leader won last year. Runners up included W. A. Bourns and J. R. McLachlan.

Death of John Hedin in Canada age 72

John Hedin died suddenly June 19 in his 73rd year after living in Canada 44 years and in Newcombe district 21 years. He was born in Sweden and is survived by his wife and son William. Services were at the Anglican Church with Rev. E K Bissell officiating. Renshaw Funeral Home arranged.

Junior W A hold picnic ends season at Silver Falls

On June 17 the Pine Falls United Church Junior W A held a picnic at Silver Falls with 14 ladies plus one child. They ferried by bus, cooked supper, scavenged firewood, washed socks, and shared salads and hot coffee. Mary Brown celebrated a birthday, and Miss Sernyk received a double boiler gift as she leaves for a domestic position.

Annette Therese Coulombe and Rene Papineau were joined in marriage in a solemn nuptial mass with floral chancel decorations and the St George male voice choir in attendance. Miss Noella Beauvier played the organ and Mrs J Desilets sang a Schubert piece as soloist.

Polish veterans urged as ideal immigrants by Canadian speaker

Speaking to the Senate committee on immigration, B. B. Dubienski of the Canadian Polish Congress argued Polish veterans and displaced persons are ideal immigrants. He predicted Europe’s surplus would fade in a few years and urged a loyalty test as the sole barrier, noting his address at 1844 Assiniboine Avenue.

Carl Zimmerman Named Brewmaster at Shea's Winnipeg Brewery

At the annual meeting Shea's Winnipeg Brewery Ltd. appointed Carl Zimmerman Brewmaster. A prominent North American master brewer, he began apprenticing with his father at Vancouver Brewery, born Minneapolis May 14 1911, moved to Vancouver 1929, Siebel Institute graduate 1934 1935, served as assistant to his father then Kiewel Brewery 1936, Wallenstein Institute post graduate 1939, past president of the Master Brewers Association of Western Canada.
