Canada safety chief L. D. Currie announced a new safety device for cages in Nova Scotia collieries. The latest equipment aims to reduce underground mining accidents and improve worker safety across the province.
Regina residents faced a two hour blackout when a joint in the main steam line blew at the power plant. Merchants saw a rush for candles as thousands were stranded on streetcars returning home from work.
Miss Kay Tyme reported a serious theft to police in Edmonton Alberta claiming four pairs of silk stockings were taken from her room.
Victoria BC Lands Minister E T Kennedy said one million acres of land in British Columbia offered as a gift for the rehabilitation of service personnel wishing to settle on the land remains awaiting acceptance by the federal government.
In Vancouver B C twenty five farmers secured surplus army trucks through a drawing at a flat price of 330 dollars each. Six hundred farmers entered the drawing. In Penticton B C local groups plan a peace festival for late August.
Last Thursday M Steiner H Steiner H E Cousins H S Webb A Hunter and E Malkoske donated blood for the Neyedli account at St Boniface Hospital in Winnipeg. A second vehicle load is planned soon with sixteen more donors needed to replenish the supply contact your correspondent E Malkoske.
A Wednesday January 23 reception for all current and former members of the 10th Canadian Armoured Regiment Fort Garry Horse is at HMCS Chippawa from 8 30 p.m. Tickets grant entry for the member and a guest. The event features dancing, supper, brief welcomes and a historical sketch of the regiment highlighting D Day Normandy Boulogne South Beveland Rhine crossing and VE Day progress with key leaders and battles.
Deeds Not Words motto defined the unit in World War II through major actions and escapes. Lt Col Wilson led the regiment after Col Morton, with Major Bruce MacDonald famed for escaping German captivity. Garry’s high casualties marked their line in the Royal Canadian Armoured Corps, ending in Normandy tours, Denmark visits, and a unique Memorial Park project in Doetinchem.
Rudolf and Melvin Sandness visited sister and brother in law Mr and Mrs J Scully. Also visiting were Mrs Scullys sister Mrs T Jessop. Al Johnstone returned from overseas and was met at the C N R station by family. Others visited Whitemouth include Miss Mary Boychuk Geraldine Hunter and family, F/Sat R J Isaacs, M Johnson from Bromhead, H Nelson, Steve and Mike Boychuk, Tpr David Cousins on leave, and William Bryck from Selkirk.
Mrs. Spencer Miller of Bissett Mines is spending two weeks in Winnipeg as a guest of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Miller and other friends.
Pine Falls residents met January 13 to launch preparations for a February carnival. Roy Perry leads the Carnival Committee with J. Lyon as vice chair and William Hibbert as secretary. Committees cover talent, refreshments, property, admissions chaired by L Taylor. Queen candidates led by Ben van Malsen. Admission set at 35c and 15c. Three entrants will compete for queen with races, prizes, and skating displays promised. last year drew a capacity Winnipeg crowd and demand for a repeat.
Miss Irene Lidstone is nominated by the combined Labor Unions. Miss Marion McCulloch is nominated by the Office and Woods Department. Miss Juliette Coulombe nannies is nominated by the Riverside club.
Jeanne Kolson Dauphin Man and Albert Johnston Pine Falls were married December 19 at St Stephen's United Church Winnipeg with Rev Harold Frame officiating. The bride wore ivory satin and lace, long veil, Premier roses bouquet. Guests included Mrs Grle matron of honor and bridesmaid Patricia Johnston. Reception for 25 at Moore's. couple to Pine Falls residence.
Lac du Bonnet District Board of Trade held its annual meeting in Municipal Hall on Tuesday January 15 with 22 members present. M Brown was elected president K McCuaig vice president J W Wade secretary treasurer and E F Shewfelt H Springman auditors. Members were named to the committee and plans set for community welfare work amid postwar reconstruction. Next meeting slated for Monday January 28 in Municipal Hall.
J C Clark of H J Heinz Company of Canada Ltd after a two day food processing and merchandising conference surveys national food situation. He says grocers teach ingenuity courage and enterprise and call for healthy competition and expanded business despite rationing wartime transport shortages and manpower issues.
The text notes continued shortages in many lines of consumer goods due to lack of essential materials. It remarks these limits hinder expanding property and making repairs, and acknowledges the difficulties faced by a person while praising their efforts as a consumer.
Selkirk edged Pine Falls 7 to 6 before a good crowd as Selkirk mounted a late rally from a 6-4 deficit. The game featured a goal by Jack Dean early, a rallied Selkirk offense, and Dave Hutchison leaving after injury with Pine Falls scoring twice in the final period.
Montreal report states Jean Paul Tellier posed as a detective using a nickel plated badge to enter a rooming house. He claimed to work for Detective Capt. Ephrem Coulombe, who did not believe him and took him to headquarters after the owner complained.
Whitemouth Community Club held its annual meeting at the Municipal Hall on January 14. W Sinclair was elected president, K Ciara vice-president, and FP R Paulsen secretary treasurer. Executives include Mrs E Malkoske, Mrs N C McCullough, Mrs H L Kendrick, G Turner, C Hunt and N Letkeman. The club aims to build a Memorial Curling and Skating rink. Building committee members are H Steiner, A H Cousins, R S Gittins, G Klepatz, H L Kendrick and D M Wardrop.
Canadian Headquarters in London announced that between 6 000 and 8 000 British wives and children will move to the Dominion in February under the Bring Back Our Brides plan. Officials said the movement will not affect troop repatriation as about 17 500 Canadian Army personnel will remain overseas at the end of February, compared with 35 000 now. The January 31 total of army personnel repatriation was not specified.
Legion Branch No. 164 met in Municipal Hall on January 10 with minutes read and a report on the New Year dance. A $42 donation was presented by Cliff Brown for the Salvage Committee. A rink plan was discussed, a river rink chosen, and a committee elected including Mort Torrance Dave Blake Harry Smith and Ray Park.
A regular meeting of the Home and School Association was held in the Municipal Hall on Monday January 14 at 8 30 p m. The treasurer Mrs H Smith reported that proceeds from the School Christmas Concert covered all costs and left a balance of about $10.00. Miss Hrenchuk announced she was seeking a speaker for the February 11 meeting. A committee to study hot drinks for lunch was proposed with one teacher one school board member and one Home and School member. Inspector Warkentin was guest speaker and warned that drastic changes will be needed in the school curriculum. He cited need for an alphabet with meaning and other shifts in measures.
T. E. Silver and R. J. Askin of Manitoba Paper Co arrived in Pine Falls Tuesday evening January 15 and stay at the Hotel Annex. Silver will replace the late Charles C. Irvine as manager. Askin is Manager of Mills for the Toronto office. C. B. Davies named assistant manager of the Pine Falls Mill.
Reuters reports large quantities of forged Bank of England notes recovered on the continent were destroyed under bank supervision. The notes included 10 shillings and £1 £5 denominations, with £5 notes described as particularly clever forgeries as part of a German campaign to disrupt Britain's economy.
