Federal plan to commemorate Indian tribes in Canada
The federal government will commission sculptured monuments to highlight the contributions of Canada’s Indian tribes and Eskimos. Resources Minister Walter Dinsdale said the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada recommended recognizing cultural characteristics through permanent public displays. Plans are in early stages with sites and designs undecided. The project aims to identify streams of Canadian cultural development through art. The government may assist in preserving two 19th century Manitoba residences linked to St Andrews. The Historic Sites and Monuments Board weighs historical and architectural values in recommending sites to the minister.
