Tantalum Mine at Bernic Lake Reopens and Expands
In the 1960s Bernic Lake’s Jack Nutt Tin Mines revived, pushing a new shaft for tantalum and its oxide. By 1967 oxide prices rose from 4 to 14 dollars per pound as Tanco ore, rich in tantalum and spodumene, was processed through a rod mill and nine Deister tables to produce heavy concentrate. The operation aims to supply oxide and metal to world markets while courting ceramic and glass industries. Bernic Lake may hold further historical promise for the venture.
