Closure of Schools in Agassiz School Division

At the February 1 1971 Agassiz School Board meeting trustees voted to close Elma Brokenhead Great Falls and Thalberg North schools as of June 30 1971. Elms students move to Whitemouth Brokenhead and Thalberg North to Beausejour Great Falls students to Lac du Bonnet St George or Power View. Grade 7 and 8 from Tyndall transfer to Beausejour Senior School. Garson will house Grades 1 3 and Tyndall Grades 4 6.

Great Falls Citizens Rally to Save Local School

Residents in Great Falls form a citizens group to oppose the Agassiz School Division Board plan to close the Great Falls School after this term. The elementary building serves 56 students in three classes with special education, library, lab, and recreation facilities. A ten point petition drew 97 percent support from Crescent Bay to Silver Falls, submitted to the board for careful study at the February meeting.

Walter Zarecki Named to Farm Credit Board

Walter Zarecki reeve of Lac du Bonnet has been named to the Manitoba Agricultural Credit Corporation board by Agriculture Minister Sam Uskiw. He replaces L W Leggat, who remains manager. New director list includes H J Andresen, Harold L McKay, Peter Wagner, and Emil Shellborn. board aims to back farm diversification with a line of credit and livestock grant programs.

Pinawa Open Mixed Bonspiel Draws 32 Rinks Across Manitoba

The Pinawa annual mixed bonspiel drew 32 rinks from Manitoba with most from Pinawa. Event one awarded prizes including an electric grill for ladies and a flight bag for men. First place went to Pinawa's Dreger rink, second to Seven Sisters, third to Jerry Martino's Pinawa rink, and fourth to Grant Bailey's Pinawa team. Third and fourth prize gifts included waffle irons and radios. A turkey dinner capped Saturday events.

Lac du Bonnet Lions Arena Benefit Night Dance

Lac du Bonnet Lions Club stages a Valentine themed arena benefit night this Saturday evening. Proceeds totalled about 400 dollars for the Arena Building Fund as the club aims to rally community support for the worthwhile cause with a promised night of enjoyment.

Whitemouth Rec Meeting Plans Public Session on Leisure

A Whitemouth area public meeting on recreation is set for February 15 or 22 with details to be announced. Jerry Maurice of the Recreation Branch will lead. The commission will also sponsor a defensive driving course in April at Whitemouth Collegiate taught by Bud Mager, four two hour lectures, exams, and a certificate for five dollars total.

Local Bay Store Supports Library Plan

The Lac du Bonnet Hudson's Bay Store will assist the University of Manitoba Public Extension Library plan on a trial basis. Manager Ralph Butchart said the service will continue if the library is well used, with 180 books total and 80 juvenile titles. The library shares store hours and aims for full use.
